The right settings to fly to the Olympus of the best, to the infinity of Starfield and beyond: here’s what you need on PC
We are gathered here again to talk about Starfieldand this time it’s at settings for the PC version: Which ones are they the best for an optimal experience? You’re in luck: given the excellence that Bethesda Game Studios aims for in terms of performance, it is normal that the trade press has racked their brains long ago to make the game make our computers sweat. For this reason, after the necessary attempts we were able to trace the most salient data. The availability of the game on Xbox Series X and S provides players with an escape from the headaches of gaming with a mouse and keyboard, but in the absence of a console, you need to roll up your sleeves.
Performance | Best settings for Starfield on PC
Sticking to the best settings, both minimum and recommended, Starfield on PC runs smoothly, especially at 1080p resolution. At the same time with upscaling FSR 2 even a GPU under the minimum wage may suffice. Which is good for the framerate, although the game makes a different use of FSR 2 than usual. There is no “quality mode” whatsoever, but a (metaphorical) on/off switch for FSR 2. The 75% of resolution can be enough to do its job, even with upscaling up to 1080p. This alone can be enough to touch 33 frames per second in the crowded streets of New Atlantis with the “old” GTX 1060. Great, right?
Sixty | Best settings for Starfield on PC
As for native resolution, that of sixty frames per second is a bit of a myth. The frames in question elude the RTX 4060 and Radeon RX 7600 at 1080p, stopping at 42 and 47 frames respectively. To achieve this, you need to drop to 1440p with the RTX 3070 while keeping FSR 2 at 75%. As for RTX 4070 Ti, with 4K you don’t go beyond forty frames. Rather, it is the tabs that have the most problems Intel Arc: with the Arc A750 the game refuses to start at all, reaching stability only on AMD and Nvidia models. In general, some cuts are needed in the quality settings.
Problems | Best settings for Starfield on PC
If you want portability and you’re not a fan of Kyoto’s dancing analog sticks, your go-to portable platform is the Steam Deck, for which we have no good news. Outside of deserts and similarly cleared areas, the slightest hint of urbanization cripples the framerate by a lot (bringing it to twenty). Even with FSR 2 at the lowest possible resolution (50%) and with the auto resolution option turned on, the situation isn’t the best. In this sense, we hope that Bethesda will take steps to resolve the situation, as has happened with other titles (cough, cough, The Last of Us).
But you’re not here for all of that, are you?
Let’s cut to the chase with the best settings for Starfield on PC, because that’s what brought us here. Well, with RTX 4060 as the card and 1080p resolution (Ultra), we averaged 42 frames per second. Try these too settings (and update your drivers: AMD and Nvidia have new ones tailored for the game) to rocket to 64:
- Dynamic resolution: Off
- Render Resolution Ratio: 100% (o 75% con FSR 2)
- Shadow quality: Low
- Volumetric lighting: Low
- Motion Blur: Off
- GTAO Quality: Low
- Shadow contact: Basso
- VRS active: Off
- film filter: 0
- Depth: Disabled
- All the rest: Ultra/High
