Last week, Google laid off more than 1,000 workers, followed by an additional 100 job cuts at YouTube. But the cuts aren’t over. The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichaisent a note to his staff, where he talks about “difficult choices”: new layoffs coming.

Sundar Pichai warns of new layoffs coming to Google

In a letter intercepted by The Verge (via TechCrunch), Pichai said this year’s cuts will not reach the magnitude of last year’s, when the company it had laid off 12,000 people, or 6% of its workforce. But there will be cuts. Pichai explains: “These role eliminations are not on the scale of last year’s reductions and will not affect all teams. But I know it’s very difficult to see an impact between colleagues and teams.”

The note highlighted that many of these changes have already been announced: there is talk of the thousand layoffs last week, in addition to the resignation of Fitbit’s co-founders, James Park ed Eric Friedman. But more people will leave Google in the next year.

On Wednesday, Google fired 100 YouTube employees as part of a broader corporate reorganization. A Google spokesperson said: “To best position ourselves for these opportunities, during the second half of 2023, some of our teams have made changes to become more efficient, work better, and to align their resources with higher product priorities. Some teams continue to make these types of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally“.

Google, after the hiring and growth of the pandemic period, in the last two years it has laid off thousands of employees – almost all last year. This year the scale should be smaller, but it is still a large number of layoffs. The hope is that Google’s new investments in AI will reverse the trend, but it seems difficult to predict this at this time.
