One Japanese professor has developed a prototype television screen to lick, able to imitate the flavors of food: Taste the TV is Homei Miyashita’s latest creation and another step towards creating a multi-sensory visual experience. Let’s find out the details.

The device, called Taste the TV, uses a carousel of 10 flavor containers which spray in combination for create the taste of a particular food. The sample of flavor then rolls on hygienic film over a flat TV screen for the viewer to experience.

The goal is to allow people to live innovative experiences, such as eating in a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home.
Miyashita works with a team of approx 30 students which produced a variety of flavor-related devices. Among them we also find one fork that makes the food richer. Miyashita said he built the TTTV prototype himself over the past year and that a commercial version would cost about 100.000 yen (770 euro).
Potential applications includedistance learning for sommeliers e cooks, and also tasting games e quiz, the professor said.
Meiji student Yuki Hou showed reporters how TTTV works, telling the screen she wanted taste some chocolate. After a few tries, an automatic entry he repeated the order and the flavor jets sprinkled a sample of chocolate onto a plastic sheet.
“It’s a bit like milk chocolate,” concluded the student.
