Let’s start seeing a good variety of virtual reality headsets on the market. Meta Quest 3, PSVR2, PICO and so on and so forth. Many use them for playingsomeone uses them for work. However, they all have a problem: the glasses coexist poorly with the VR viewer. We at techgameworld.com, however, want to point you out a possible solution.
Why the VR headset with glasses is a problem
It’s very simple, and if you’ve tried it, you already know it. If we have a somewhat significant vision defect using a VR headset without glasses means seeing badly and miss half the fun. Using it with glasses, however, means risk scratching lenses and prisms. Because the lenses or frames of the glasses could collide with the prisms of the viewer. Beyond the economic damage, it’s not pleasant because scratching worsens the quality of our vision.
Some headsets have more space within others (like the PSVR2, for example), but the final result also depends on how big is the mount it’s yes as we are used to wearing it.
The solution is simple
Think how nice it would be if we could have our own visual correction within the prisms of the VR headset; no glasses and guaranteed visibility.
Obviously, we are not talking about buying a viewer with prisms made especially for us, but about getting some lenses with the correction we need to place on top of the prisms.
If, like us, you have given it a try with your optician, then you too have been looked at like an alien. But fear not; all you need to do is take a look around the Internet and… There are sites where you can buy lenses with already custom-made inserts ready for your viewer.
Where do we find them and how much do they cost?
There are quite a few sites. The ones we focused on were VR Optician, Reloptix, Hons VR and VR Wave.
For the cost they’re all pretty aligned; in general we are talking about just over a hundred euros to which shipping and handling costs are added possible VAT. Some sites also apply a increased cost if you have a strong visual defect.
What we chose for ourselves
We would like to specify that This article was not sponsored by anyone. Simply, in the editorial office we needed the lenses to review any VR games, we bought them, and we’ll tell you how it went.
In the end, for us, we decided to place our order from VR Optician for purely practical reasons. First of all, the company is German, so there are no import costs to pay, shipping is fast and the goods do not stop at customs. According to ring has indentations at the nose. So, if you need space (like the person writing this) it is not a detail to be overlooked. Hons lenses also have a notch, while those other two companies apparently don’t.
How to place your order
Place your order it’s very simple. We got our eye prescription, copied the corrective values some glasses for distance (far) and we put the lenses in the cart.
Attention; if you have a visual defect even “up close”; or whether to wear reading lenses; those values should be ignored. If you only use glasses for reading, then you don’t need corrections inside the visor. If despite this, you still see blurry in VR, adjust your viewer better or consult an ophthalmologist.
For those who are afraid of getting confused while placing the order, the best thing is go to your optician and ask him what needs to be written in the various boxes directly on the website. Take a photo of the screen and Copy the same values at home. To be safe, we did this.
What did we order, exactly?
Just to give you a measure of judgement, we ordered a pair of corrective lenses Equipped with blue light filter for use with a PSVR2.
The visual defect It’s not excessive, but it’s not ignoreable either. We pointed 1.5 diopters on the right eye and of 2.75 on the left. To this must also be added one rotation of the axis left eye vision of approximately 50 degrees.
We received everything with UPS in about ten days and we were quite satisfied with the overall experience. We spent a total of 135 euros, shipping included. Inside the box we found a hard plastic case similar to those of glasses, the two pocket lenses separately in microfibre and the classic cloth to remove dust.
However, keep in mind that if you have a different visor or a more pronounced visual defect the timing may not be the same.
The PSVR2 with corrective lenses; how did it go?
For us it was a bit like the first pair of glasses: You don’t realize your vision is bad until you put them on. Unfortunately, for obvious reasons, we cannot put a photo here to help you appreciate the actual difference.
To be completely honest with youfrom the point of view of there was a difference in image sharpness but it wasn’t huge. What really changed in our case is that we realized it was less tiring for our eyes. We feel like having slightly longer sessions, seeing well even without glasses and without having that strange sensation in our eyes when we switch off.
From the point of view of comfort we feel satisfied. The same result as the glasses but without the mount and the rings, at least in our case, do not cause any discomfort.
We had doubts that the lenses were prone to fogging, but we did not notice this phenomenon. That is to say, they fog up no more or less than prisms fog up without correction.
The only thing we’re not exactly thrilled about, but it’s our specific model, is that we had a bit of trouble inserting the rings on the prisms. Partly because they are a little stiff and partly because we were afraid of scratching the lenses. In the end we succeeded, but if you share a headset with others or want to remove corrective lenses after each session, take this small inconvenience into account.
Pay attention to calibration
The first time you put on the visor you won’t see what you expect, but don’t be discouraged. The eyes still have to get used to it and the viewer needs to be calibrated again. Unfortunately, it seemed to us, with the addition of the lenses both physical and optical calibration (the distance between the pupils) must be done with more precision to obtain a good result. While without glasses you can enjoy a little tolerance, with lenses so much.
If you see any chromatic aberrations (colored borders where there shouldn’t be any) in our case it turned out to be just a matter of better adjust the position of the visor on the forehead.
Summing up: the VR viewer without the glasses
After some debate in the editorial team we reached the shared position that it is an expense that we can recommend to those who have somewhat significant vision defects. If you have a problem seeing far around a diopter, in our opinion, you can even get by without it. Then, obviously, it also depends on how much you use the viewer and how much the blurring bothers you.
In our specific case, It’s not one of those life-changing purchasesbut we are the same very happy we did. The sharpness of the image has not changed radically, but thestrain on our eyes Yes. So, in our specific case, we think that the game was worth the risk.
The expense is not excessive if you consider that they are prescription lenses; but it is not even insignificant if we consider that the lenses can only fit inside a specific VR viewer. On the value of the purchase, therefore, smust be done a very personal assessment.
