The relationship between Telegram and Apple is not the bestthe. The messaging application is officially available on the App Store but has to deal with some limitations. The presence of public channels with no restrictions on content, in fact, has created many problems for Telegram with Apple. The messaging service is also available in one full web version with all the features. The Telegram web app, however, has to deal with the limits imposed by iOS and the Safari browser.
Telegram criticizes Apple for the limitations applied to web apps on iOS
According to Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, with these limitations “Safari is killing the web”. The CEO has come to highlight 10 problems related to iOS and Safari that create difficulties for developers. From the management of notifications to the VP8 and VP9 codecs up to the display update frequency. The problems encountered by Telegram and other developers due to Apple’s limitations would be numerous.
Recall that Apple obliges developers to use WebKit as a web browser engine, creating many problems in development. These limitations, already in the past, have attracted the attention of the antitrust.
At the moment, in any case, there is very little room for maneuver. Apple will not change its attitude until there are regulations that prevent the application of these limitations to web apps and browsers. For now, therefore, Telegram will have to continue to live with these problems.
