Monday will be remembered as Mark Zuckerberg’s black monday. However, during the blackout of WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, more than 70 million users signed up for Telegram, clogging its servers.
Telegram: boom in subscribers during the social blackout
On Monday we all thought the same thing: the internet broke. Mark Zuckerberg’s social media blackout threw many into despair, while others simply read a good book. However, as the Facebook team worked on the problem, some 70 million new users joined Telegram for the first time. This is a real flood of people in social withdrawal, during the blackout that lasted about six hours.
The news comes from the Independent, and is confirmed by Pavel Durov, CEO of Telegram, who stated:
“This is a record increase for us, both in the number of subscribers and in the activity on the app.”
A situation that is not easy to manage, which has created many difficulties for the messaging app. However, Durov says he is satisfied with his team’s work in managing such important flows:
“I am proud of how our team has handled this situation. Telegram has continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users. Some subscribers may have encountered a slower speed than usual, but it is inevitable when millions of users all log in at the same time “
During the downtime, Facebook employees were prevented from entering the office, which also affected the stock exchange. On the contrary, Telegram had announced, already at the beginning of this year, that it had reached 500 million monthly users.
