The EU antitrust will keep an eye on future transactions related to the metaverse, one of the main trends in the tech world of the near future. The confirmation came directly from Margrethe Vestager, Vice President of the European Commission, during an interview with the online newspaper POLITICO Europe. This is an important position that confirms how the EU is monitoring the future developments of what could become, in a short time, an important reference in the sector.
The EU will analyze the metaverse in detail
According to Vestagar, the metaverse tobefore the emergence of “new markets and a range of different businesses”. In the near future, therefore, some subjects could “have a dominant position”. For this reason, underlines the vice president of the Commission, the EU will have to carefully follow the next developments to verify that the metaverse and all its evolutions adapt to European legislation. In particular, among the areas to be followed closely, we find the use of NFTs within the metaverse.
Online video games are also to be monitored
Vestagar points out: “In the world of video games, there are already people who pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for ‘skins’ and some items that can be traded and there are human traders who stand between the seller and the buyer.” All of these transactions take place online, creating new parallel markets. The world of video games is not the only one that follows these trends. In the future, the EU will closely monitor these systems. Already in the coming months, the authorities in charge should begin to deepen the monitoring of the mechanisms that regulate the metaverse and online transactions.
