Iris is the name chosen for the future Italian satellite constellation for Earth Observation. The announcement came today, directly from the International Space Station, from the astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti on the occasion of the first media inflight call. The event was also attended by the Minister for Technological Innovation and Digital Transition, Vittorio Colao, the Minister of Education, Patrizio Bianchi, the President of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Giorgio Saccoccia, and the Director of ESA’s Human and Robotics Exploration, David Parker.
The new Italian satellite constellation will be called Iris
The name of the constellation of satellites was chosen by the examining commission, chaired by Samantha Cristoforetti and made up of ESA astronauts, Luca Parmitano and Roberto Vittori. The name of the constellation, Iriswas chosen among 1061 proposals received from 638 schools. The confirmation came directly from the official press release of the ministry as well as from the video you find below. The awarding of the winners is scheduled for the next one June 1, 2022.
The project for the new constellation Iris will be completed within five years with the support of ESA. It should be noted that the new constellation will also be responsible for supporting the Civil Protection and other Administrations to combat hydrogeological instability and fires, protect the coasts, monitor critical infrastructures, air quality and weather conditions. It is therefore a key project of great interest for the future of Italy.
