The LG UltraGear OLED curved gaming monitor review: a show before our eyes

The OLED technology it is now spreading rapidly also on monitor da gaming and in the same way, the curved screens able to extraordinarily involve the player. What’s better than a gaming monitor that embraces both of these technologies? LG thought about it with the new family of Curved UltraGear OLED monitors of the GR95QE series which has two models of 27″ and 45″. Thanks LG, we got our hands on the 45″ UltraGear OLED and tested it extensively to tell you how it performs in the field in this review.

Our review of the LG UltraGear OLED 45GR95QE monitor

Let’s start by saying that OLED quality and screen curvature are just the tip of the iceberg because this great monitor (in every sense), offers much more. We are faced with a large monitor that boasts a impressive 240Hz refresh rate, HDR 10 support, QUAD HD resolution of 3440×1440, support for NVidia G-Sync, AMD FreeSync, Dynamic Action Sync and much, much more.

Design

LG UltraGear OLED recensione

Difficult to render the real dimensions of this monitor on “paper” ( 992.7 x 537.7~647.7 x 362.5 mm for 10.9 kg of weight) but yes, we are facing an imposing monitor. The 45″ occupy their space as well as the large base, necessary to best support the weight of the monitor. However, the measurements do not make it extremely bulky thanks also to the remarkable thinness of the outer edges. The thickness increases towards the rear and central part of the monitor which houses, in addition to the attachment of the base, also the available ports and luminous LEDs. Among the ports available we find: 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, 1 DisplayPort 1.4, 1 USB 3.0 input, 1 4-pole headphone output and an HDCP 2.3 input.

The monitor boasts a display, as anticipated, 45″ with QUAD HD 3440×1440 resolution characterized by all in all thin frames considering the size of the monitor. There curvature is 800R which is neither too accentuated nor too little to best accompany the natural rounded shape of the eye and avoid tiring it. At the bottom we find the power button and management of the menu of some settings.

All in all, the monitor looks excellent with a minimalist design, all black decorated, on the back, by RGB lights and the LG Ultragear logo. The curves (it must be said) are very soft and the OLED technology allows the use of a much thinner skeleton which gives lightness to the whole. The Hexagon Lighting in the back can be customized and while they lose some appeal for monitors close to the wall, they look excellent.

Inside the package, in addition to the monitor, we find the power cable, an HDMI cable, a DisplayPort cable, a USB cable and a practical remote control to better manage all the monitor settings.

Technology

lg ultragear

Inside this beautiful casing, we find the best technology currently available in terms of gaming monitors. OLED quality is unity to one blazing fast 240Hz refresh rate and 0.03ms (GtG) response time. This translates into a really excellent fluidity and rendering of images which proves equally useful in competitive video games. L’OLED guarantees an excellent rendering of the darkest areas and at the same time the brightest and brightest result colours that come as realistically as possible to the one thought by the game developers, without alterations.

All this is joined by the technologies supported by this monitor such as NVIDIA G-SYNC which guarantees one perfect synchronization between GPU and panel and technology AMD FreeSync for a greater fluidity of movement even during the most adrenaline-pumping actions. The screen also received a anti-reflection treatment and low glare to eliminate reflections and ensure an optimal viewing experience even if there are light sources in the room. There are also monitor settings that can help us get the best image quality depending on the game we are playing. Indeed, we find theOLED Carewhich helps us prevent display burn-in, the Dynamic Action Syncto reduce image delay, the Black Stabilizerto ensure visibility even in the darkest scenes (we’re looking at you, Horror!) and much more.

To all this is obviously added the support for the LG Calibration Studio, the software with which to set up our monitor in the best possible way and in more detail.

Our test of the LG UltraGear OLED

LG UltraGear OLED recensione1

For this review, we tested LG’s UltraGear OLED 45GR95QE curved monitor for about two weeksduring which time it replaced our primary monitor.

Let’s start right away by saying that the quality of materials used and attention to design is truly excellent, in perfect line with LG standards. Yes, the Monitor is big and heavy, matched only by the ease of installation. No screws or screwdrivers around, just a trivial “click” between the base and the monitor and a quick screwing (unless) of the base to the central body and off you go. The monitor is ready to work.

Once it’s on, we warn you, it will be hard to go back. The OLED quality is truly excellent and performs best both on video games and during movies or TV series. What has left us most impressed is the versatility of the screen and its settings. If you’re not used to managing quality, frame, color and all the elements manageable from the settings, you’re covered. The monitor will do everything itself by activatingfor example, HDR for games that support it. At the same time, if you are a geek and want to choose every detail, you can. Between monitor settings, Calibration Studio software and an entire remote control at your disposal, you will have the possibility to create the perfect calibration for your video games.

There are video games and video games

lg ultragear rdr2

Obviously we are faced with a monitor designed for gaming and for that we have put it to the test with many games (it’s always work, mom). Here, however, we must open a parenthesis / debate and tell you to think carefully about the games you want to play on this monitor.

In fact, curvature, size and quality make it an exceptional screen for single-player video games with a remarkable degree of immersion. let me tell you, admiring the large spaces of Red Red Redemption 2 or the settings of Cyberpunk 2077 was truly a shocking experienceone of those sensations that makes you love videogames even more. On the other hand, we have played games like League of Legends and taking advantage of the maximum resolution, it could backfire.

Although the video quality is always impeccable and the width of the monitor allows you to see a wider map, reaction times are lengthened. Your gaze will have to travel a wider space forcing you to physically turn your head left and right and in the same way the mouse will have to go further to get to the point you want. Precious milliseconds that can prove detrimental in video games like MOBAs.

In general, however, whatever your choice, know that you will hardly be able to go back to other monitors.

The LG UltraGear OLED monitor review in a nutshell

It’s no longer a secret, this LG UltraGear OLED monitor has made us dream. The video quality is excellent, the choice of materials and design excellent and the support for the latest technologies of the moment extremely necessary. Whether it’s for gaming, for video entertainment or to throw away your second monitor (you won’t need it anymore), this UltraGear will make you happy.

And the price for happiness? €1799 (list). Not at all an affordable figure, we know, but the quality of this screen and the company’s attention to detail make it deserving of that figure.

This monitor may offer you a gaming experience that you are unlikely to experience in your lifetime. A window into various digital worlds just waiting to be opened and never closed again.
