Important statement from Tim Cook. Apple’s CEO said “there aren’t enough women at the table yet” in tech companies around the world, including the Cupertino-based company. In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Cook said technology “won’t get what it really could” without a more diverse workforce.
Tim Cook addresses the shortage of women in the tech sector
“There are no good excuses” for the shortage of women in the sector of technology. This is the heavy statement made by Tim Cook during an interview with the BBC, during which the CEO also spoke on the issues of Augmented reality e metaverso. “In the future, people will wonder how we managed to live without AR,” says Cook. “We are investing a lot in that space”. But returning to the topic of women, Apple’s CEO clearly stated that the future of the tech sector depends a lot on the presence of women.
“I think the essence of technology and its effect on humanity depends on whether women are at the table,” she said. “Technology is a great thing that will accomplish a lot of things, but unless you have different points of view at the table that are working on it, you won’t end up with great solutions.” Yet, over the years, companies in the industry have made great strides in terms of gender diversity. In 2021, for example, Apple hit the 35% of female staff in the United States. And this seems to be just the beginning of a path that technology companies will soon take.
Deloitte Global estimates that large global companies will average nearly 33% of female representation in their workforce in 2022, with 25% taking up technical roles. Although, in reality, one of the challenges facing the industry is the lack of girls who choose to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics at school. “Companies can’t stand back and say ‘there aren’t enough women studying IT, so I can’t hire enough.’ So says Tim Cook, arguing that everyone should be required to take some sort of programming course before they finish school. This way everyone will have a “working knowledge” of how coding works and how apps are created.
