A top 5 “silly” on the subject of what the ears have to hold up for New Year’s Eve: the best explosions from the world of video games
After a slightly more sensible ranking, we allowed ourselves to start the year with something a little lighter: for this reason, we wanted muster five explosions from video games to draw up one top 5. Do not expect an inflexible regulation: after all, you will probably have done the small hours and it is similarly difficult even just to see this mini-ranking written in jet (reason behind the partial focus on Nintendo, but if you want we can repeat it at the beginning of 2023). It is common, up to a point, for enemies to trigger explosions in video games, but the start of the top 5 may also surprise you. We doubt Spyro needs introductions, although if you remember his opponents they tend to disappear in a cloud. Not so in Spyro 2: Season of Flame for the Game Boy Advance, though. The Digital Eclipse trilogy has gone a bit muted, despite having kept the spirit of the Insomniac Games titles intact while everyone was intent on tearing Enter The Dragonfly on a fixed console. And in a sea of pre-rendered sprites, the … curious way of putting an end to enemies stands out like few others. Boom!

Sorry for the quote to This Song Sucks, the final track of the StarBomb music project, but it was the only way to include Bomberman in our top 5 of the best explosions in video games without falling for granted. The image below is from Super Bomberman R, but we could have taken it from any episode of the (currently) Konami series. For what it’s worth, the graphic effect of the blasts never fails to give that sense of destruction. Even when he is throttled (like the players themselves) by the walls that make the game a real… multiplayer bombshell.

As always in our latest rankings, or at least those drawn up by myself, there is a mandatory pause to praise Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The “fault”, if nothing else, is the game. Bringing so many universes together and keeping them so true to themselves means teasing anyone who starts writing this kind of special, but this time we give the actual credit to another game. We allude, through Link Cardboard, to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, in which the explosions enjoy an always spectacular cartoonish effect. We would also include Kingdom Hearts II by extension, in which however this peculiar “bang” was only seen in the 1998 Mulan-inspired world.

Of deflagrations, in Super Mario Galaxy, there are so many, and we really don’t know which one to choose. We’ve included one below just for showmanship, but between the birth of planets, galaxies and (spoiler for the final scene, suppose…?) Entire universes there’s something for everyone. Thanks to a clever game of shots, even with its years (2007) the game still manages to make shoes for many contemporary titles. That is why we have included a photo below that was taken in one of the game’s most majestic scenarios, the False Step Galaxy. Is it a rash? Certain. Does he make a bad impression? Obvious.

The entire top 5 was born from a simple question: “but of all the explosions seen in video games, how iconic are those of Metal Slug“? And on a scale of one to ten, we answered “yes” and started writing. From simple bombs to the devastation of end-of-level bosses, the SNK series has never failed to steal our hearts, our money in the arcades and, why not, even some diopter between one bomb and another.
