Apple has released a major update, iOS 16.6.1for iPhone and iPad, aimed at fixing security vulnerabilities discovered by researchers at the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto. It is therefore advisable to update your devices immediately to avoid security risks.
iOS 16.6.1 fixes two vulnerabilities, updated iPhone and iPad
The Citizen Labs (as reported by Bruno Ruffilli on Repubblica) explain that the vulnerabilities had been actively exploited to spread the Pegasus spyware of the Israeli company NSO Group. Although Pegasus is typically used for surveillance purposes on specific targets such as dissidents, journalists and political opponents, Apple recommends that all users install the update to ensure the security of your devices.
The iOS 16.6.1 update addresses two major vulnerabilities. The first concerns the Image I/O framework, which handles reading and writing of image file formats and related metadata. The second vulnerability is associated withapp Apple Wallet, where an attachment can allow the execution of malicious code. Apple reports reports indicating possible active exploitation of this vulnerability.
To upgrade, you must:
- Go to Settings,
- to select “generals,”
- Choose “Software update” and check for update availability iOS 16.6.1.
- If the update is available, you can proceed with the installation. If it is not visible, you can try restarting your device.
This update strengthens Apple users’ security against potential threats, so it is recommended. Apple will soon officially launch iOS 17, together with the new ones iPhone 15, which will present on September 12.
