After introducing the passkey on WhatsApp for Android in October last yearnow Meta is about to bring the security feature to iPhone. Login on iOS will therefore become simpler and more secure.
WhatsApp, login passkeys also arrive on iPhone
Previews on this new feature coming to iOS from the WABetaInfo site (via DDay), which examined the WhatsApp beta app within Apple’s TestFlight program. In this trial version, the experts at WABetaInfo have found the possibility to add a passkey to further strengthen account security.
The passkey represents a significant departure from traditional passwords. It consists of a combination of private key and one of public key. The public key, generated from the private key, resides on the service domain (in other words, on WhatsApp’s servers). But unlike traditional passwords, the private key remains on the user’s device. Once you have registered a device, you can log in from it without any problems, in complete safety. Also because it can be integrated with the biometric recognition: FaceID, fingerprint or PIN code. The same way you use to unlock your iPhone.
The transition to this technology marks an important turning point in the management of online security. Many services are already taking advantage of the biometric data of users for the private key, an approach that offers an additional layer of security. FaceID o TouchIDor even your device PIN, are more effective than unlock passwords, messages or calls.
In fact, even if public keys were to be stolen from a server, attackers would not be able to access the service without also possessing the private key on your device. A safer solution, and easier to put into practice.
The transition to passkeys on WhatsApp for iOS it should arrive soon, although at the moment we don’t have any information regarding the release date. We will keep you informed.
