After debuting on other Meta group platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, 3D avatars have finally landed on WhatsApp too. The announcement – with a Facebook post directly from CEO Mark Zuckerberg – comes after a testing phase that lasted several months. The first images of 3D avatar prototypes date back to last June.
How WhatsApp 3D avatars work
In an official blog post, WhatsApp explained that users can now use avatars as their profile picture or they can Choose from one of 36 custom stickers available. These reflect emotions and actions of a different nature. Avatar stickers on WhatsApp look very similar to Snapchat’s Bitmoji stickers. The post reads:
“Your avatar is a digital version of you that can be created from billions of combinations of different hairstyles, facial features and outfits. WhatsApp has also confirmed that upgrades will arrive in the future that will allow users to improve their style.
We currently understand that the feature is not available for all Italian accounts. We therefore recommend that you keep the app updated as 3D avatars may be coming to all devices very soon. To activate them, once the application has been updated, just go to the menu “Settings” where the entry will appear “Use avatar”.
Unfortunately the avatars already created on Facebook and Instagram they cannot be imported to WhatsApp. Likewise those of WhatsApp cannot be used on other platforms. It will therefore be necessary to create it from scratch but WhatsApp promises that the process is absolutely simple.
