Microsoft is currently working on cloud-native video games, that should arrive exclusively within the Xbox ecosystem over the next few years. The division in question is led by Kim Swiftwho joined Xbox last year as an industry director for cloud gaming.
Xbox: Native Cloud Games Coming
Swift is best known for her work as Project Lead and Portal Designer, before working as a designer and artist in Left 4 Dead and in its sequel. Most recently, the woman played the role of director of the design department of Left 4 Dead for Stadia.
In a video presentation aimed at developers, Swift explained that the goal of the division she leads is to “collaborate with world-class game development teams to develop cloud-native games and offer players unprecedented experiences that they can be obtained only with cloud technology “.
Cloud-native games use this technology for elaborate some parts of the game, such as physics, lighting, environments or AI. This has a number of potential uses, such as having more processing power on a home console or making sure online gamers can all get the same synchronized experience.
A prime example of this is the multiplayer mode of Crackdown 3which uses the cloud to process the physics of environmental destruction, allowing players to blow up huge buildings into countless small chunks without any drop in performance.
