Xiaomi launches the Own My Voice project
Speech-impaired users can use a unique, ‘personalized’ artificial voice to communicate with text-to-speech. An important leap forward compared to the standardized and monotone voice usually used by these services.
This initiative is part of Tech for Good, which aims to improve everyone’s life thanks to technological innovation. Zhu Xi, coordinator of Xiaomi’s Tech for Good technology committee, says: “We are excited to experience technological innovation and bring its benefits into people’s lives. Being able to satisfy the requests of each user, as it is in their personal sphere, it’s a really important responsibility “.
To generate the most suitable voice, the project team recruited 200 volunteers ready to ‘donate’ their own voce. An algorithm of voiceprint matching he then matched the voices of the users with those of the volunteers, in order to find his voice that is closest to the real one. The voice of the donors has been manipulated to be new and original.
Text-to-speech technology then made it possible to gradually acquire a spontaneous rhythm and intonation. The Xiaomi AI Labs have now published 37 articles on this topic since 2017, continuing to experiment to get more and more natural voices.
“If we know how to listen and quickly meet the special needs of small groups of people, the technology with its advantages will be able to spread faster, reaching all the people who need ito ”concludes Zhu Xi, coordinator of Xiaomi’s Tech for Good technology committee.
