The multi-device function has changed the way people use WhatsApp over the years: our phone does not need to be connected to the Internet to be able to use the popular messaging app in all its variants, from WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp Desktop, up to Portal. At the moment it is possible to connect your WhatsApp account to 4 devices and 1 phone, but that could change very soon. In fact, WhatsApp is working on a 2.0 version of its multi-device function.
Multi-device WhatsApp 2.0: what changes?
One of the most interesting features of the new version 2.0 of the muli-device function seems to be that of being able connect multiple mobile devices to the same WhatsApp account at the same time. To reveal it are the screenshots published by the Twitter account WABetaInfo, which showed how this new option will work.
According to the published images, it seems that, by opening WhatsApp on the second mobile device, the application will download all messages from the server, without requiring your main phone to be connected to the internet. In fact, only the data saved in the cloud are involved in this operation.
Furthermore, once your second mobile device is connected for the first time, WhatsApp will synchronize the chat history, through an obviously end-to-end encrypted process. It is not yet clear, at this time, if the company will reserve this functionality only for tablets (iPad and Android tablets) or whether it will also be extended to mobile phones, although the latter option seems very likely.
Anyway, this feature is under development on the WhatsApp beta for iOS operating systems, but the company is also working on a version dedicated to Android devices. That said, no release date has yet been announced for this update, and in all likelihood, we will have to wait a few more months before being able to use it on all devices.
