The chip crisis that is affecting more than one hi-tech sector is making itself felt more and more. As smartphone makers try to stock up, 2021 sees a sharp decline in production.
The consequences of the chip crisis on smartphone production
Alarming numbers for the mobile phone industry and smartphone manufacturers. In fact, a study by Counterpoint Research, reports that 2021 has seen a decline in smartphone manufacturing and delivery. It is about nearly 50 million fewer units compared to 2019. The main reason seems to be precisely the crisis in the availability of chips which, after the automotive industry, is affecting that of electronic devices.
According to the data reported by ANSA, 90% of the sector will be affected by this problem. Indeed, according to what analysts reported, it will be the second half of 2021 that will manifest the most important consequences. According to estimates, the total units of smartphones shipped for 2021 are expected to grow by 6% annually for a total of 1.41 billion units. This figure was much lower than forecasts, which spoke of a growth of 9% and of 1.45 billion units.
Producers try to stock up, but that’s not enough
In the meantime, to cope with the crisis, the major producers are trying to make supplies, not always with excellent results. According to analysts, in fact, only 80% of the chips ordered were delivered in 2021. And it is expected that, in view of the third semester, this percentage may drop until 70%. A crisis that affects the entire sector, without distinction of brands, even if Apple seems to have a slightly advantage, thanks to the proprietary chips.
Proprietary chips could be a viable but temporary solution to the problem
A move that seems to be close for other brands as well. For example, rumors that want the new are chasing each other Google Pixel equipped with internal Tensor processor. We will see if this is the solution to this age-old problem.
