Diary of a Slapper: The animated feature film on the Disney + platform is released today, December 3, 2021
Today, December 3, comes out on Disney + Diario di una schiappa, based on the first of the best sellers signed by the pen of Jeff Kinney. Directed by Swinton Scott (Futurama) and written and produced by Jeff Kinney, this new animated adventure from 20th Century Animation will be available to subscribers on the Disney + platform. In the original version the film boasts the voices of Brady Noon (Cloth of Champions: Game Changer), Ethan William Childress (mixed-ish) e Chris Diamantopoulos (Baby mouse).
The plot
Greg Heffley is a puny and ambitious kid, with a vivid imagination and big plans to become rich and famous, but first of all he has to survive middle school. To make matters worse, Greg’s adorable best friend Rowley seems to go through life and succeed in everything with ease! As details of his hilarious – and often disastrous – attempts to feel appropriate fill the pages of his diary, Greg learns to appreciate true friends and the satisfaction that comes from fighting for what’s right.
Jeff Kinney and the series
Jeff Kinney, one of the best known and most prolific authors of our age, is both the screenwriter and producer of the animated feature. The books of Diario di una schiappa have sold more than 250 million copies in just fourteen years.
Properio Kinnney ha dichiarato:
With this film it seems that the book comes to life and it is exciting to see Greg Heffley, his family and friends in an animated version. It is Wimpy World represented in a way that no one has ever seen before. Working on this film, I feel like we are keeping a wonderful secret. Can’t wait to finally share it with the world!
The style of Diario di una schiappa
Contrary to what is done in live-action, the animated film manages to get much closer in style to the original novels. The opening titles and some subsequent scenes even take place in 2D, with Jeff Kinney’s famous drawings simply in motion, but identical to how they appeared between the pages of the books.
After the initial presentation, made with cartoons, the style becomes more rounded and the first characters appear in 3D. The final effect is excellent: it is similar to the style of novels and brings the audience even closer, who have now forgotten 2D animation.
During the world press conference, Kinney himself confirmed:
I was very scared to see this version, but as soon as I was shown the first scenes I immediately realized that it was a quality product
Friendship
As we now know from the books of Diario di una schiappa, the film also touches on important themes, first of all friendship; in fact, what Greg’s mother claims is that what matters in life is having a good friend with you. Obviously there is nothing wrong with wanting to leave a good impression on someone you don’t know, but never at the expense of true friends and people you love.
The great strength of Diario di una schiappa is that Greg is a real character, in which everyone can see himself again.
Brady Noon, the young actor who voices Greg said:
It happens to everyone to make mistakes, you can always be a better friend
Bullying
Another important issue that Diario di una schiappa touches on is that of bullying, despite the fact that it is still a light and mostly comic film.
Kinney states:
It is all inspired by my childhood and thankfully this aspect is different today. Of course the bullies are still there, but I believe that parents and teachers are much more aware of the danger of bullying and that children are safer than my generation was.
Although Diario di una schiappa has a target among the youngest, it is still a vision suitable for everyone, in which anyone can find relief from the difficulties of everyday life and have a laugh. All that remains is to connect to Disney + today, December 3rd, and wish you a good viewing!
