For the first time outside the USA, in the Italian hospital Maria Cecilia Hospital, the technology robThetica for an intervention of stenosi carotidea. The hospital team used the latest generation robotic system Corindus CorPath GRX from Siemens Healthineers to perform the surgery on a 76 year old patient. The robotic system is able to maximize the operator’s accuracy during the vascular interventional procedure. In particular, the system intervenes in the insertion and positioning of catheters for the application of stents.
At Santa Cecilia Hospital the first operation of this type outside the US
The robotic system Corindus CorPath GRX robotic system used by the Maria Cecilia Hospital team was presented last October. It is a system capable of performing automated movements and high-precision anatomical measurements.
There will therefore be an even higher level of safety and reliability for patients during interventional procedures. The robotic system also reduces the insertion time of guides and catheters by 53%. Furthermore, for patients operating with the robotic system tested by Maria Cecilia Hospital, there are also advantages in the post-operative course.
Thanks to’application of robotics, in the future, it will be possible to intervene remotely going to favor the creation of more and more effective territorial intervention networks. Technology may represent a fundamental resource in the near future. According to one estimate, around 74% of patients would consider being operated by a robot in the future.
The comment
Dr. Paolo Sbarzaglia, Interventional Cardiologist of the Diagnostic and Interventional Cardio-Angiology Laboratory directed by Dr. Fausto Castriota, said: “At Maria Cecilia Hospital we use this technology mainly for complex coronary surgery. Considering that the devices, stents and catheters used for coronary intervention are similar to those used for carotid procedures, we evaluated the possibility of being able to intervene with the robotic system to obtain greater precision in treating a stenosis of the carotid artery. This is the first surgery outside the US performed with CorPath GRX on the carotid artery ”.
