TLC: exceeded 10 Tbs of capacity on the MIX

MIX, the main interchange point of Italian Internet networks, and among the first on a continental level for conveyed traffic, has reached a historic milestone: exceeding the threshold of 10 Tbs of capacity on its PoPs.

A result that testifies to the rise (+ 100%) in the last two years compared to the previous twenty years: from 2020 onwards, it can therefore be said that things have changed – even on the pandemic moment that has forced many at home and to use networks for work, but not only – involving the main Italian Internet Exchange and 360 operators connected. An important step for those who, like MIX, want to offer connectivity and content services of increasing quality, to an ever-increasing number of users and at costs that bring an advantage.

“In recent weeks we have been witnessing a substantial increase in the average traffic traded per single operator. This is due both to the increasing number of connected ASs and, and above all, to the policy of over-provisioning of the connected capacity implemented by MIX for some years already. The goal is to ensure the absorption of unexpected traffic volumes and up to 10 times higher than the contractual traffic thresholds “, explains Cristiano Zanforlin, Chief Commercial Officer of MIX.

Comment like this Mauro Magrassi, Chief Technical Officer MIX: “The growth trend of recent years is due, in addition to the other longer-term phenomena in progress (FTTx diffusion, DAD and home working), also to the advent of live streaming of sporting events, which has brought a substantial difference in aggregate traffic profiles, where spikes due to live events have become the norm, with peak variations within a few minutes that even reach values of several hundred Gbps of traffic. This has led operators to increase the available bandwidth, thanks to MIX’s determination to offer its peering services at increasingly competitive rates. MIX does not stop and, on the contrary, relaunches, concentrating its commitment in two directions: on the one hand, favoring high-capacity connections, offering operators an increasingly lower fee per Mbps and, on the other, developing expansion projects to facilitate the traffic flows between the CDNs that distribute the contents to the hot-spots of aggregation of the access operators, in Milan but not only “.
