Google has patented a technology for i touch controls “on the skin” for the next generation of Pixel Buds and for the Pixel Watch which is expected to launch this year. In this way we will be able to communicate with the devices by touching wrists and cheekbones instead of directly smartwatch and headphones. A novelty that we will be able to see perhaps already this year.
Google Pixel Watch and Pixel Buds, touch controls on the skin arrive
The technology is not completely new. On the contrary, Sony already launched it a few days ago with the new headphones LinkBuds, the ring earphones that you can control directly by touching the skin in front of your ear. This way you don’t run the risk of tread more than necessary in the ear of the headphones, which happens with the physical keys. But you won’t have the problems with the touch controls that happen when for example you sweat during a workout, you run the risk of changing the track of a playlist while you arrange the earphones better in the ear cup.
But now Google has also patented at the WIPO its version of the technology (as LetsGoDigital reports). And he immediately wanted to extend its horizons. In fact, the document reads “Skin interface for wearable devices “ and works for both earphone and smartwatch.
According to what was seen in the patent, Google would have patented the possibility of move your finger up or towards your ear to increase the audio volume, with an opposite movement to lower it. But there is also the possibility to activate other functions with a ‘tap’ near the ear. The possibility of touch the arm before the watch or the wrist “downstream” of the device for similar actions.
Features should be programmable (as also happens for the Sony LinkBuds) and expandable tomorrow. So that you can respond to calls or activate the Google Assistant without having to touch any device, just your skin.
Are skin checks really useful?
The introduction of the new system in Sony’s headphones has a specific function. The LinkBuds have a ring shape to let outside noise in, so adding touch or physical controls to the body of the headphones would have been complex. But in general this technology could come in very handy for earphones. Touching them can be uncomfortable, because you risk moving them in the ear (especially the lighter ones). And conversely, when you want to place them better in your ear, it often happens that you accidentally pause the song or podcast you are listening to.
On the smartwatch like the Pixel Watch, which Google is expected to announce this year, using the commands is easier. But here Google could limit itself to program simple actions. Maybe the same volume controls as a pair of paired headphones (which are not the new Pixel Buds), or during a physical activity the keys on the skin to pause or stop the workout.
But while we almost all agree that the earphone controls need some improvement, this is not necessarily the way to go through. Part of Google’s ‘brand’ is to propose technological innovations with each new product and this could be an interesting possibility. But there are many other reasons why we can’t wait for the new Pixel Watch to launch. Among all, the integration of health and sport services, but also maximum control of the Google Assistant. The touch controls on the skin may not be a revolutionary breakthrough, but Google will certainly present many other innovations to make its first smartwatch attractive.
For the moment it seems that the Pixel Watch may arrive the May 26, 2022, but in recent days some rumors think it may take a few weeks. In the coming months, more news will probably come out on the Mountain View watch and also on the Buds. We will keep you informed.
