Sony confirms that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) will arrive on PS5 within a few months.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) finally coming to PS5

A few hours ago Sony announced that the variable refresh rate (VRR) will arrive on the PlayStation 5 in the “next few months”. So what changes for the players? Basically anyone who has a TV or PC monitor compatible with HDMI 2.1, will be able to dynamically synchronize the refresh rate of the display with the graphic output of the PS5. This is a long-awaited feature by Sony users, also because it has been available on Xbox Series X and Series S since their debut.

The Variable Refresh Rate minimizes visual artifacts such as screen tearing. The gameplay of many titles will therefore be smoother, as images are rendered instantly. All of this results in sharper graphics and minimized input lag. Sony explained that video games for PlayStation 5, even those released before the introduction of VRR, will still be able to benefit from the functionality thanks to additional patches. “Future titles, on the other hand, will include support already at launch,” the company concluded.

However, the company recently rolled out VRR support on its HDMI 2.1-equipped TVs in the US and Europe. No dates were given regarding the arrival of the feature on the console: the company was kept vague with a “in the coming months”. Meanwhile, the new System Update for PlayStation 5 arrived in early March.
