During a presentation at UBS Paris Electric Car Day, Volkswagen announced some technical changes to its MEB platform, particularly in terms of charging power and range.
Silke Bagschik, Sales and Marketing Manager for the ID range, stated during the presentation that the dedicated MEB platform will receive technical improvements. This common basis for many group vehicles (Skoda, Volkswagen, Audi, etc.) has been used since 2019 since the arrival of the compact ID.3 and since then Volkswagen has not provided information on further developments and updates.
Now, finally, the German carmaker is unveiling some upcoming news. Although not explicitly announced, it is to be assumed that some changes will affect the battery management software or the chemistry of the cells. Updates will cover in particular, the charging power, which would rise to 200 kW, against 150 kW today.
Volkswagen’s MEB platform will guarantee more autonomy and better performance
One of the most interesting aspects of the MEB platform “magazine”, especially for motorists, it’s about autonomy. From Wolfsburg they speak increase of up to 700 km for some vehicles. This is equivalent to approx 150 km more autonomy compared to current values. In fact, as is well known, to date, the ID.5 and ID.3 offer a maximum of 523 and 553 km respectively according to the WLTP standard. This increase in autonomy could materialize with the arrival of the electric station wagon derived from concept Volkswagen Aero B. The final model, with a more aerodynamic appearance than the current SUVs, is expected to go on sale in 2023.
Acceleration should also improve, with a click from 0-100 km / h which drops to 5.5 seconds for all-wheel drive variants. Currently the same models reach this speed from a standstill in 6.3 seconds, as stated by the house for the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX. However, Volkswagen does not specify how this modification is carried out, which in any case should not affect the engine.
