Samsung today launched its industry’s first 24Gbps GDDR6 memory
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (here for more information), the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced its big news. That is, to have started sampling the first DRAM Graphics Double Data Rate 6 (GDDR6) industry’s 16 gigabit (Gb) with 24 gigabits per second (Gbps) processing speed. This is based on Samsung’s third-generation 10-nanometer (1z) process using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology. The new memory is designed to significantly improve graphics performance for next-generation graphics cards (Video Graphics Arrays), laptops and game consoles. As well as applications based on artificial intelligence and high performance computing systems (HPC).
Statements on the first 24 Gbps GDDR6 memory
Below are the first statements regarding the first 24 Gbps GDDR6 memory.
The data explosion now driven by artificial intelligence and the metaverse is driving the need for greater graphics capabilities that can process huge data sets simultaneously, at extremely high speeds.
he has declared Daniel Lee, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics’ memory product planning team. Who added:
With our industry-first 24Gbps GDDR6 sampling, we look forward to validating graphics DRAM on next-generation GPU platforms to bring it to market in time to meet an onslaught of new demand.
Engineered with an innovative circuit design and highly advanced insulation material (High-K Metal Gate; HKMG) that minimizes current leakage, the GDDR6 with 24 Gbps on Samsung it will deliver speeds that are 30% faster than the previous 18Gbps product. When integrated into a premium graphics card, GDDR6 DRAM can transfer up to 1.1 terabytes (TB) of data or approximately 275 Full HD movies in just one second.
Details
Designed to be fully specification compliant JEDEC, Samsung’s GDDR6 DRAM will be compatible with all GPU models, facilitating large-scale market adoption across a wide range of graphics solutions. Samsung’s new GDDR6 range will also feature low-power options that help extend the battery life of laptops. Using technology DVS (Dynamic Voltage Switching) which adjusts the operating voltage based on performance requirements, Samsung will provide 20Gbps and 16Gbps versions with approximately 20% higher energy efficiency at 1.1V, compared to the industry standard GDDR6 from 1.35 V.
Graphics DRAM is increasingly sought after for use beyond PCs, laptops and game consoles, extending to other graphics-intensive applications such as HPC, autonomous driving and electric cars. Targeting these emerging markets, Samsung’s GDDR6 will enable uninterrupted 4K and 8K video playback while supporting demanding AI accelerator workloads. Samsung continues to lead the graphics DRAM market globally and expects high-performance graphics to see double-digit growth every year over the next few years. With customer reviews starting this month, Samsung plans to commercialize its 24Gbps GDDR6 DRAM in line with the launch of the GPU platform, thereby accelerating graphics innovation across the high-speed computing market.
