Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: track and track guide (part 9, Egg Trophy)

Born as a DLC and present by default in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Egg Trophy is the first “extra” championship: here is the guide to tracks and tracks

While waiting for the ninth episode of the mustache-motoring saga, the time has come to face the ninth cup: the guide to tracks and tracks from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will speak today of the Egg Trophy. And this is where the game begins to mix the old and the new, amalgamating new ideas with circuits that fans have been clamoring for. Today we will see GCN Yoshi Circuit, Excitebike Arena, Dragon Wall and Mute City. Well yes: the fourth circuit is also the first way in which, sadly, the Big N has buried the F-Zero under the most lucrative four-wheeler franchise. Few sentimentalisms, however: there is so much to talk about!

GCN Yoshi Circuit

We could cheat, but in reality we will go into more detail: if you really want the short version, of all the tracks of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (or, in general, of all the tracks of the series in its entirety), what we will see in this part of the guide is the only one to trace the silhouette of a character. If you know what shape a Yoshi looks like in profile, then, you already know what to expect from GCN Yoshi Circuit. However, the duty to report calls… and we are here to answer!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: track and track guide (part 9, Egg Trophy)

  • Layout: The finish line is on the “sole” of the hypothetical Yoshi. After the first two turns, you can cut a hairpin bend if you pass under the waterfall with a mushroom. For the rest, just expect lots of curves to follow with surgical precision. Where the “nape” is, then, there are as many Piranha Plants as there are possible cuts on the dirt road that a mushroom can grant you. Apart from a small ramp on the next corner, however, we really have nothing else to report.
  • Assessment: And even with the little we have to say, we still find ourselves a little jewel in our hands. 9.5 / 10.

Arena Excitebike – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe track and track guide

In reality it is not only F-Zero that relives “alone” among the tracks and tracks of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: even the classic Excitebike survives in this guide under the name of Arena Excitebike. And if excitement at the wheel is what you are looking for, then trust me: this “bike” is here to “excite” – all of you.

  • Layout: In a similar way to another track that we will talk about between two episodes, also in this case it is two straights followed by a curve each. The straights are longer than seen in Baby Park, but the infrastructure is also decidedly more elaborate. Specifically, slush and ramps are randomly generated. It will be up to you to improvise. Yes, maybe this is where we are really “cheating”, but we don’t make the rules!
  • Assessment: A fun track that, albeit with a stratagem (aimed at recreating the effect of the editor in the original game), manages to stay young. 8.5 / 10.

Dragon Wall – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe track and track guide

If you ever thought that Buzzodrago from Super Mario Galaxy 2 deserved its own circuit… you would be the first, if we really have to be honest. However, the huge statue of Buzzodrago on which the races of Dragon Wall presents a couple of pitfalls. Let’s try to talk about it properly.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: track and track guide (part 9, Egg Trophy)

  • Layout: The antigravity section inside the statue is actually just a bit narrow. Instead, you will have to be careful about what awaits you at the exit, given the high number of unprotected curves on the sides. However, several of them offer dirt roads on the inside: you already know what to do if you have mushrooms. The section from which you can spot the finish line above you offers a very generous descent with jumps: it’s the right time to do some stunts! After one last big corner, the track will twist just enough to bring you back to the aforementioned finish line.
  • Assessment: Thematically speaking, the reference to oriental iconography and to the figure of the ouroboros (“the snake that eats its own tail”) could be explored more. Only one track remains fun, albeit far from the creative peaks of the series. 7.5 / 10.

Mute City

As you saw in the eighth installment of our Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arena guide, you should already know roughly what it is Mute City. The incarnation of him in this game offers hints to Smash, like a billboard on which Captain Falcon invites us to “show him the moves” … a way like any other, in short, to remind us that the legacy of F-Zero now lives only of cameo. For an authentic F-Zero experience, play this track at 200cc!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: track and track guide (part 9, Egg Trophy)

  • Layout: True to the series of origin, Mute City is composed solely of anti-gravity sections and teeming with turbo footboards. The coins are not collected on the track, but on the blue-violet trails on the sides. After several breakneck swings, the hairpin at the top of the minimap will offer a chance to cut it if you have a mushroom with you. The curve after the final straight will precede a ramp on the last descent; not only can the curves below be cut with mushrooms, but if you have one you should use it just before the ramp. The track, with the full knowledge of the level designers, is too fast to give you time to notice, but there is actually a cut just before the ramp. Your reward will allow you to beat the other drivers by a good couple of seconds, if you play your cards right!
  • Assessment: Seeing F-Zero revive would bring tears to anyone, but this track succeeds in the not easy task of amalgamating the essence of an entire series by adapting it to the context of Mario Kart. If you don’t have Nintendo Switch Online or any other Big N consoles, this could be your only access to the series’ cyberpunk imagery. And there are far worse trade-offs. 9/10.
