The elusive Dragon-type boasts many illustrious exponents, many of whom are in Paldea: here’s which ones to bet on in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
If you are here, you are looking for the best Dragon-type additions for your team in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. We can’t blame you: in the franchise this element was born as an exclusive of a single evolutionary line, and then extended to other noble reptiles. As a rule, and this has nothing to do with the elemental effectiveness of the attacks, dragons can withstand many attacks in general and, until the advent of X and Y on Nintendo 3DS, boasted just two weaknesses. Not that things have gotten much worse for them: there are only three types that are super effective against wyverns. Let’s talk about it in depth.
General preamble
If you want a good Dragon-type to include in your Pokémon Scarlet and Violet team, try to make sure it’s only one! Balancing your team is very important and most importantly, it is too avoid monotypes. There are 18 elements that a creature can belong to and as we said in our review of the games, the adventure will cover them one by one. You have six vacancies: with double-type beasties you can cover 12 of them and, if you like, with the right therapies you could potentially cover every weakness reaching 18 (or rather, 13 in a single fight). Dragons are vulnerable to attack Ice, Leprechaun and, not even on purpose… Drago.
Haxorus – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
And it’s off to a flying start with a great Dragon-type Pokémon, which made its debut more than a decade before Scarlet and Violet. Many of the best little monsters with this elemental association are considered “pseudo-legendary,” a category little prolific and give it long incubation eggs (find here what you need to know about breeding). With a word like “Hax” in its name, the Axew evolutionary line boasts a base attack value that, once it reaches the stage of Haxorusis around 147. Unfortunately, it must also be said that this beast is also a monotype. Axew can be found near the Sierra Attacksfor example east of the Mescadia Passage.
Goodra – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
You go from a fifth-generation novice to a creature from the next generation. We speak, in the case, of Goodra, latest evolution of Goomy. Like Haxorus, Goodra is also a monotype, and like Haxorus it cannot be found fully evolved in tall grass. So what is the reason for the ninth place in our top ten? Its stats are more balanced, and Goomy can be found much earlier. Let’s talk about Great Cauldron Lake, just north of the bottleneck mentioned in the aforementioned egg guide. Beware of Sliggoo: the evolution of Goomy will turn into a Goodra climbing to level 50 while it’s raining. Wait for them to update Pokémon HOME in 2023: Hisui’s Goodra (directly from Pokémon Legends: Arceus) is also Steel-type, thus resisting 10 types.
Dragonite – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
And straight from the Kanto region, the original pseudo-legendary returns. Everyone knows Dratini’s evolutionary line, and after the noble aura of Dragonair here’s what Dragonite demonstrates to the new generations that he still knows how to do it. Dragonite is also of type steering wheel, giving it an edge over Fighting- and Bug-types. Unfortunately this also brings with it a weakness to the Rock type, while the Ice attacks against him also take advantage of the effectiveness of the type acquired with evolution. Nothing to despair about: the stats are distributed evenly, from a minimum of 80 to a peak of 134. Find Dratini in the lake great cauldronbut Koraidon/Miraidon must know to swim. Watch out: it is elusive and always hovers around level 50.
Hydreigon – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Technically, Haxorus doesn’t count as a fifth generation pseudo-legendary. This honor belongs to Hydreigon, infamous for the underleveled specimen of the evil Ghetsis. Be that as it may, this hydra has received a new form expressly in Violetwhich however goes outside its usual combination of types (Dark/Flying). Normally, the creature keeps the combo though Dragon/Dark which gives it a massive edge over Psychic- and Ghost-types. Compared to the advantage over Bugs seen with Dragonite, the weakness to Fighting and Bug will come in very handy. And as you can see below, the first stage Deino can be found literally in front of the Mescadia Passage Pokémon Center (but it’s exclusive to Scarlet).
Baxcaliber – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
That ugly face Frigibax is the new pseudo-legendary introduced by the last couple of games. He and his evolutions, Arctibax and Baxcaliberall boast the typology Dragon/Ice, which was once exclusive to Kyurem. However, if you can get hold of a Frigibax in the vicinity of Sierra Attacks, you will gain the Heat Exchange skill, which results in total immunity to burns. If a Fire-type attack hits you then, the Pokémon’s Atk will increase. Adding the advantages of Ice over Ground- and Flying-types, at the expense of a disadvantage against Fighting, Rock, and Steel, we have a great team member.
Garchomp – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
We are in the top five. Gible and Gabite (below) can be found in many caves on Paldea (plus the Mescadia Passage… notice a pattern?) and once you reach level 48, the latter evolves into Garchomp. Since the latter is also of Earth type, has advantage over Poison, Rock, Steel, and Electric. Of course, with the second type the dragons’ resistance to Grass and Water attacks also goes down the drain, as well as accentuating the weakness to the Ice type. But with all the resistances Garchomp gets compared to other wyverns, would you really miss out on a similar element for your team?
Dragapult – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
The guy Spectrum of Dreepy and Drakloak, exclusive to Violet, makes Dragapult’s final form one of the best pseudo-legendaries out there. There is no longer talk of resistance, but of immunity in toto, as regards Normal and Fighting attacks. Also, belonging to the ghost branch gives a Dragapult an advantage over the Psychic-type. Unfortunately, the weakness to Dark attacks is his Achilles heel. Not bad, however: if you’re riding a Miraidon, you can find this ghost in a third of all Paldea. Getting it is much easier than the rest of the list!
Salamence – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Again, the fact that Bagon is exclusive to Violet says a lot about the version that had the most luck with dragons. But you may be wondering why Salamence both on the podium with a bronze medal when Dragonite, too Dragon/Flying, is located further down. Ironically it is new shape of the Pokémon, that is exclusive to the Scarlet endgameto give it more variety thanks to the combination Dragon/Dark. The same creature, therefore, enjoys respectively the advantages of Dragonite and Hydreigon based on the form in which it is found. And if you know how to exploit Teracristal and, in general, a vast pool of moves, you have the best non-legendary for this type.
Koraidon – the best Dragon-type Pokémon for Scarlet and Violet
Yep, there’s a reason we specified “non-legendary.” The face of Pokémon Scarlet it will be your mount for most of the adventure. Said like this, however, it is easy to forget that Koraidon it’s also a nice Dragon/Fight. Once you have completed each Gym, each Team Star base and each fight against the Dominants you can reach the endgame area and capture it to exploit its skills in battle. Usually the combined statistics of the monsters do not exceed the sum of 600, but Koraidon is around 670: a single value does not touch the hundred. Attack and speed are his strengths, which is obvious for a living bike…
Miraidon
… as it is obvious that the other cover legend he would win the gold. In addition to having two digital eyes, more suitable for giving the idea of a vehicle, Miraidon for much of the game, he is identical to his scarlet counterpart. Once in battle though, it turns out what the combination of types is Dragon/Electro. This second type only gives him one weakness, while Koraidon gains three. Miraidon’s ability also helps him more: whereas Koraidon benefits from a boost to Fire attacks, Miraidon benefits from a bonus to Electric moves, which is the type he actually has.
