The third edition of the 64K Stunning Running
A unique opportunity to demonstrate their skills and challenge each other with strokes of code in a fun and stimulating environment. It recently ended successfully third edition from the 64K Stunning Runningthe team programming competition with the legendary Commodore 64 (C64) proposed by Human e Computer History Museum of the Computer Science Department of the University of Verona in the context of DIGITALmeetthe largest widespread festival dedicated to technologies in Italy.
The competition involved 5 high schools in the Veneto region and saw over 50 students compete with the fascinating programming of the Commodore 64, the best-selling computer in the world.
To create the required software products, implementing the algorithm of the famous board game “Mastermind”, the guys could only count on C64 manualare 39 Kbytes in RAM memory and a very particular language, the BASIC V2. Language is made up of 71 total commands based on those cardinal principles of programming which are also the basis of modern languages.
With a space of limited memory and without the powerful and elegant instructions of Python and Java, young developers eagerly took up the challenge. They had fun, they learned a lot but above all they fielded their own I committhe creativity and the know how to work in a team. The tournament has been able to stimulate their propensity to problem solvingil lateral thinking and theingenuity to maximize the available resources.
An incredible challenge
The entries were evaluated by a jury composed of a representative of theICT specialist area of Umanaa representative of DIGITALmeet and by the editor of Computer History Museum of the Computer Science Department of the University of Veronaexpert in C64 programming.
64K Stunning Running it is confirmed as a constantly growing initiative, which becomes more and more exciting year after year. A success also from an educational point of view. All the competing groups managed to produce appreciable results in a short time and in almost total autonomy.
