The Zero Day vulnerability, never before found online, was discovered by a researcher from Citizen Lab, a research group from the Munk School of the University of Toronto. There vulnerability affects WebKit, the software used by the Safari browser. From that flaw, hackers could have accessed your data on iPhone.
Once the flaw was recognized, the Cupertino engineers thanked Citizen Lab for the report and credited the researcher, who remained anonymous, for the discovery. Citizen Lab had gained notoriety by exposing spyware in government devices made by the Israeli company NSO Group.
In recent years there have been several vulnerabilities in WebKit, the basis of Safari. According to TechCrunch, there have been nine bugs since last year that hackers could have been actively exploiting, of which four via WebKit.
Apple recommends downloading the update a iOS 16.3.1, iPadOS 16.3.1, macOS Ventura 13.2.1 and Safari 16.3.1 to mitigate the risks. While software updates remain generally recommended for security, these kinds of updates to cover holes should be a priority for users.
