Returnal is the new third-person action-adventure game developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. In this game, players take on the role of Selene, an astronaut stranded on an ever-changing alien planet, forced to fight to survive and discover the secrets of the world around her. With fast-paced gameplay and intriguing story, Returnal promises to deliver to the players an experience of game engaging e stimulating. In this review, based on the much more in-depth review of Returnal for PS5, which we invite you to read, we will go to eviscerate the technical aspects of an exclusive ported version for PC.
The roguelike to the nth degree – Review Returnal PC
Returnal is a title that cleverly combines a deep and engaging story with rigorous roguelike gameplay. In each new game, the player will be faced with dangerous environments infested with enemies and bosses, but also full of resources, weapons and upgrades. Despite the need to start over every time you die, the developers of Housemarque have managed to create a narrative path e playful for the protagonist Selene, that evolves and yes progressively strengthen every respawn.
The beauty of the discovery also lies in dying and capturing the differences with the previous world, totally modified and changed from every point of view. The only ever-present note is the gloomy and gloomy setting. Weapons that can be found are always diverse, in always different corners it will be possible to find shop dove boost up their own equipment. A mix of randomness which, however, does not tire, does not bore, indeed it stimulates and satisfies. Definitely not a game for everyone, but definitely a game that will be one cornerstone such, also thanks to the excellent technical sector that we are going to dissect in the next paragraph.
A port with all the sacraments – Returnal PC Review
History has taught us that not all ports have been successful. In these terms it is clear that the responsibility rests almost entirely on the development team and on the “upper floors”. This is because it is they, the upper floors, who decide when the game must be published and, consequently, how much time the players have technicians per fit it.
Returnal is one of the few cases where the work and the time invested in the development of the PC title it really was well spent. The technical sector is truly excellent; we had the chance to test the game from before the exit official. This allowed us to appreciate it both in the first ones original stages (which in any case were always very respectable and super stable), both in those following the official release with consequent updates.
Gaming Experience and Testing – Returnal PC Review
Before going into the gaming experience, which I have already anticipated to have been masterly, it is fair to give you a yardstick of comparison build which has been used.
- Case: Be Quiet! Pure Base 500 FX
- Motherboard: Biostar B660 GTA
- CPU: Intel Core i5 12600
- RAM: Crucial Ballistix 3200 MHz 16GB (8×2)
- SSD: Samsung 980 PRO 1 TB
- Video Card: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT (Adrenalin 23.2.2)
We were able to enjoy the game 2k with a high enough framerate, approx 100/110 FPS (slightly variable) at MAX details. Clearly the card was being used at 98% with really high temperatures (but we users AMD we are used to this). Subsequently we made several tests, sometimes also using the active synchrony (ie the FPS block). Below you will find some screenshots with the relative details. I should point out that, when the term “undervolt” is inserted, it means that the card has been underpowered a 1150 mV instead 1200 factory mV. This change, easily done from the AMD control panel, lower noticeably the maintaining temperatures the performance unchanged.
The game, as can be seen from the tests, is absolutely playable and enjoyable every resolution. The resolution more other, as is normal, they return a truly satisfying feedback. We also consider the very high frame rates excessive, also because, effectively, they return nothing from the point of view of yield. As far as we’re concerned, we’ve kept them fixed at 90, even though 60 would have been amply sufficient, straining the video card very little. The only glitches we encountered were some microlag when Selene had to go through a portal. However, they have been promptly corrected since the first update.
Conclusions
After testing Returnal in the review phase, it can be said that it is a product of absolute quality even on PCwhich, however, has some common flaws to games like that. It must certainly be admitted that Returnal is not suitable for everyone. Its high difficulty, coupled with a storyline complicated e mysterious, it can certainly discourage less experienced players from continuing the adventure. Fortunately, the excellent gameplay, high-quality graphics and the impeccable technical realization somewhat mitigate this negative aspect and make the game very addictive for users passionate of the type. The version porting of the game still increases the quality general of the product by making available to enthusiasts a real gem.
