After the recent flops and the many criticisms, Square Enix changes leadership and its leaders and lets go of Yosuke Matsuda as president: let’s find out all the details together and who will replace him
Despite having two highly anticipated titles in the works such as Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the recent flop of Forspoken and the closure of Babylon’s Fall have put Square Enix in difficulty, most likely not only in terms of image, but also with the shareholders. It is news of the last few hours that the company has announced that the President Yosuke Matsuda will cease his office in the month of June, at the annual Meeting with the Shareholders. To replace him will be Takashu Kiryu, currently Company Director.
As for the reason behind Matsuda’s departure, the company said the following in an official statement:
Following the rapid change in the business context inherent in the entertainment industry, the change we are proposing follows the intent to restructure the management team to cope with constantly evolving technological innovations and to maximize the creativity of the group [di Square Enix Holdings Co. Ltd.] and to deliver even better entertainment to our worldwide audience.
Change of president for Square Enix: Kiryu replaces Matsuda!
Yosuke Matsuda has been with Square Enix since April 2013 and became chairman in June 2013, replacing Yoichi Wada. His successor, however, is Takashi Kiryu, who began his career as General Manager of the Planning Division in June 2020 and held various senior positions, arriving at the communications department in April 2021. In addition, Kiryu is president of the board of Square Enix China.
The change at the top of Square Enix, with the lapsed president Matsuda, was at least predictable and a little anticipated, considering the huge criticisms received by the company following at least questionable marketing choices.
