Starting in May Microsoft Teams will officially introduce the avatar 3D for video calls, which means that you can enter video calls even without using the webcam or camera. The novelty had already been announced in 2021, but the development of the feature has suffered numerous delays.
How 3D avatars will work in Microsoft Teams
Using the avatars it will be possible to participate in the calls without physically appearing on the video. Or rather by appearing on video through a faithful 3D avatar, which you can create and customize as you like. Perfect solution if you just don’t feel presentable that day. Once the 3D avatar has been created, it takes part in the video call, while you can give it a voice by keeping the video camera off. But it is not a static sticker, on the contrary! The avatar will move and make facial expressions based on your tone of voice.
The Verge also reports that Microsoft is working with Meta to support Quest VR headsets in Teams. In this way the 3D avatar functionality would be further expanded, with the possibility of physically moving one’s avatar. A practical example may be to raise your hand and shake your head.
