Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will finally phase out the legacy blue checks starting April 20. A sort of déjà vu, given that the Tesla CEO had previously promised such a maneuver.
What are legacy blue ticks on Twitter?
For those who don’t know what we’re talking about, the legacy blue ticks are the verification ticks assigned to users for their celebrity status. These are therefore those accounts that have a blue check on Twitter without being a Twitter Blue subscriber, the subscription plan of the blue social network. To obtain the verification badge it will therefore be necessary to pay, even if you are a prominent public figure or an important portal.
In recent weeks, there has been much discussion about the position of the The New York Timesone of the major global information newspapers, which refused to pay for the verification check, having its precious badge removed.
Elon Musk’s ultimatum: until April 20 to keep the badge
Elon Musk had initially set April 1 as a date, the deadline by which all legacy profiles would lose the blue check if they did not subscribe to the premium service. Initially it seemed like a real April Fool’s Day, and in fact nothing happened on April 1st: the legacy ticks are still there.
Today, however, a new expiration date has arrived: April 20th (via TechCrunch). Even in this case, however, the combination of dates makes you smile: April 20 is written 4/20, which in American slang is used to indicate the consumption of cannabis. After all, April 20 is considered Cannabis Day.
Difficult to understand if it’s all a gigantic coincidence or yet another game by Elon Musk, who now uses Twitter as his personal toy.
