Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny preview, our first impressions!

In this article we want to give you our first preview impressions of Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, taking advantage of the demo recently released on Nintendo Switch

The Disgaea franchise, while still niche for Western gamers, is certainly Nippon Ichi Software’s best known outside of Japan. The company has a marked love for JRPGs of various kinds, from turn-based dungeon crawler titles such as Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, to action rpgs such as The Witch and The Hundred Knight (and its sequel), passing through the strategic on the chessboard such as, precisely, the Disgaea series. After a practically excellent fifth chapter from (almost) all points of view, the company is ready to return with Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, whose arrival in Europe is scheduled for next June 29th exclusively for Nintendo Switch (unlike the Rising Sun, where the title also arrived on PlayStation 4).

New deal new zombie

In recent days, however, to make fans mouth water and to catch the eye of those unfamiliar with the series, NIS has released a demo on the Nintendo eShop of Disgaea 6. The demo offers the first two game chapters and allow us to experience the beginning of the bizarre adventures of Zed, ready to grind dead (his own and others) in the classic crazy Netherworld. Let’s find out together what are our very first impressions of Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny in this preview!

This first introduction to Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny puts us in the shoes of Zed, an all too tough zombie, and his friend Cerberus, a stuffed pug that seems to have little to do with the infernal hound. The two are on a journey looking for a way to defeat the Lord of Destruction. To tell the truth, Zed has already tried it countless times, failing miserably at every attempt and having to reincarnate and start over. All for Bieko, sister of Zed, whose role is still to be defined within the narrative of Disgaea 6, which always arises on a level of absurdity and commendable eclecticism.

A jump into the past? – Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny preview

Both the unfolding of the events and the protagonists of the events, in fact, are as per the standard of the series over the top, captivating and terribly interesting. It is not so much what happens on the screen that amuses the gamer, as the “how” is posed and narrated. Irony, black humor and sarcasm are the masters, allowing each character to express the best (or worst, depending on the point of view) of their character and adding depth to the protagonists and NPCs.

Also returning is the core gameplay of the previous Disgaea, even if the innovations introduced seem to be very many even in this simple free trial version. Nippon Ichi Software has first of all decided to raise even more the cap for the levels of the characters, the statistics and the damage inflicted (and received, of course), reaching truly astronomical figures and that will appeal to all fans and fanatics of numbers. Just think that the level cap was officially raised to 99.999.999. Even the level up has been facilitated, and even in individual levels it is possible to raise our characters by a minimum of 50/60 levels.

More or less – Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny preview

The classic chessboard combat system typical of the genre is back, with a party consisting of Zed, some classic supporting characters of the series (such as the Prinny on duty) and a long list of pieces that can be created through the Dark Assembly. In the demo the classes that could be created were relatively few, but the addition of new jobs has already been confirmed in addition to the already many already present in DIsgaea 5, so we already imagine the embarrassment of choice in the final version of the title. The same weapon management from the previous chapter is also returning, although now the individual pieces will be able to use only one weapon at a time. The Reincarnation mechanic is back, with which it is possible to reset the character level while keeping the statistics intact, the Evilities and the Squads.

In short, the core gameplay has remained almost totally intact compared to the past, so how to justify the 6 years of distance between Disgaea 5 and Disgaea 6? From what we could see in the demo released on Nintendo Switch, the first big step forward has been made on a graphic level. The game world, as well as all character and NPC models, are fully rendered in 3D. Disgaea 6 is therefore the first chapter of the series to be all in 3D and is obviously much heavier than in the past. And on Nintendo Switch it shows, definitely a lot.

User friendliness and where to find it – Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny preview

The developers have made available three different graphics options. The default one, that is, the one that will start as soon as the game is started, is the mode Quality, which makes the title practically unplayable due to the Frame Rate dramatically below 30 fps (and much, much below). The mode Performance definitely improves the situation, blocking the fps at 30 (at least from what we could see in the demo), but making the game world (and the Netherworld in particular) blurry and not very detailed. A detail that can already be seen on the Nintendo Switch screen in the laptop, let alone with the console inserted in the dock. The mode Balanced was the one we chose, in the end, to complete our test, and, although the frame rate is not exactly the best, it seemed to us a good compromise.

Another novelty compared to the past is the introduction of three features that both hardcore players, accustomed to the Disgaea way of doing, and new gamers, perhaps intrigued by these more user friendly mechanics, will love. Let’s talk about the introduction ofAuto-Battle, of Retry he was born in Replay. In particular, the first option will allow the party, through the single press of a button, to play autonomously guided by the game’s Artificial Intelligence. Although the most established gamers can dodge this option with arrogance, there is no doubt that at very high levels, where farming is wild, it can be very useful and less frustrating to accumulate resources and money.

Let’s wait!

To conclude this preview of ours on Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny, we can be fully satisfied with the first steps taken in the role of Zed. The new chapter of the Nippon Ichi Software franchise seems to be the largest and most expanded ever and also seems to want to attract both fans of grinding and exorbitant numbers, and new gamers, through the introduction of user friendly mechanics and a more general graphic appeal. bewitching. It remains to be seen how it will manage to behave on Nintendo Switch in the most agitated situations, given the problems already encountered in the first hours, and how the narrative will develop. We wait, Disgaea has rarely disappointed. About.
