The EU wants to make AI-generated content recognizable to fight thumbnail disinformation

The EU’s view on Generative Intelligence is clear: we must ensure that AI is not used to support disinformation and create fake content to be disseminated online. The concept is reaffirmed by Vera Jourova of the European Commission. Companies adhering to the EU Code of Conduct will need to actively tackle disinformation including with regard to AI-generated content.

The EU aims to tackle disinformation caused by generative AIs

Companies adhering to the EU Code of Conduct will have to decisively tackle the disinformation caused by AI. To reiterate it is Vera Jourova of the EU Commission which highlights: “Signatories integrating generative AI into their services such as Bingchat for Microsoft, Bard for Google should build the necessary guarantees that these services cannot be used by malicious actors to generate disinformation”

Companies involved in AI content generation should “label” such contents in order to make them recognizable. At the moment, however, it is unclear how the EU intends to proceed on the matter. Apart from the words released to the press, the Commission representative did not provide precise indications regarding the countermeasures to be put into practice, in the short and long term, to counter the disinformation of generative AI.

It will probably be necessary to wait several more months before arriving at a possible program to regulate AI. We will know more, for sure, in the near future.
