LG Electronics continues to invest in advanced road safety solutions using technology vehicle-to-everything, ovvero V2Xwhich allows a vehicle to transfer information to other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure, a technology that will take on an increasingly strategic role in the imminent era of autonomous driving.
LG and the prevention of road accidents with the development of Soft V2X
In collaboration with the Seoul government, LG has in fact completed the development of an advanced service to prevent road accidents and has tested its effectiveness in some school areas of the city through the “Seoul Smart ITS 2.0 Deployment Project”. In fact, LG’s project involved the development of technology “Soft V2X”, a V2X cloud system built entirely in-house by LG e based on 5G network.
Soft V2X collects and analyzes a variety of data, including position, direction and speed of pedestrians and vehicles, and uses them to inform drivers and pedestrians in real time of potential road hazards. The solution is also able to share information on nearby traffic and road signs, by connecting to an intelligent road unit (RSU) equipped with an AI camera.
Easy to use, Soft V2X can be installed through a simple smartphone application and integrated on connected devices such as bicycles and electric scooters, motorcycles, and in-vehicle infotainment or telematics systems.
LG and Soft V2X technology: the pilot test
The recent pilot test carried out in the areas school of Seoul – two elementary schools and a kindergarten in Gangseo-gu – involved a total of 6,700 participants and demonstrated the effectiveness of LG’s service. In six months, Soft V2X sent over 40,000 road hazard notifications to pedestrians and vehicles, allowing 74.8% of pedestrians and 68.4% of drivers to avoid potential accidents by reducing speed or changing direction.
LG with this project has confirmed the reliability of the Soft V2X system in providing information for road safety, thanks to the connection with the ITS infrastructure, and has made people aware of the importance of paying more attention on the road, helping to reduce the risk of accidents and encouraging them to proceed with caution in the presence of traffic.
The 26th Meeting of the 5G Automotive Association
On the occasion of 26° Meeting della 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) held in Seoul on May 11, LG took the opportunity to invite 70 global automakers and industry experts to participate in a live demo to experience the Soft V2X system. Very positive comments have emerged from direct experience of the LG solution, especially on the effectiveness of real-time notifications capable of changing people’s behavior and preserving their safety.
LG will continue to invest in Soft V2X to further improve its ease of use and refine its services based on the feedback shared by project participants. During the next 5GAA meeting to be held in October in the United States in Detroit, LG will introduce an even more advanced evolution of Soft V2X capable of offering services tailored to the specific needs and demands of different markets.
In light of the growing attention to the problem of human safety and the discussions opened by Governments to create cooperative intelligent transport systems (C-ITS), LG expects that there will be great interest in the Soft V2X system.
