Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers with Zendaya will open the Venice Film Festival 2023 on August 30 out of competition
In the film, defined as a “sexy comedy”, the actress Zendaya plays a prodigy tennis player, linked to a husband and an ex, both champions now in trouble. It will therefore be Challengers with Zendaya, directed by Luca Guadagnino, to open the 80th Venice Film Festival on August 30 at the Palazzo del Cinema. The film, co-starring the actress with Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, will be present out of competition and has already caused discussion since the publication of the first trailerdue to a menage a trois whose media effectiveness is boosted by Zendaya’s popularity.

Challengers follows Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a tennis prodigy married to a debacled champion, Art (Mike Faist). Tashi plans a restart for Art on the Challenger Tour, where, however, another struggling tennis player, Patrick (Josh O’Connor), Tashi’s ex and Art’s best friend. Sport, ambition, feelings and attraction merge and mingle in a whirlwind story. Luca Guadagnino, who signs with this film his first all-American work (MGM/Amazon in the USA, Warner Bros in the rest of the world) defining his work with these words:
