The streets of Rome will be the scene of an exciting showcase of electric mobility this weekend, when the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to Italy for rounds 13 and 14 of Season 9
One of the longest circuits in the championship (3.385 km), the EUR City Circuit winds around the Marconi Obelisk and the Square Colosseum, in the southern area of the city.
The circuit, fast and demanding, features long straights and ups and downs. This circuit has become a firm favorite with drivers and promises an exciting race weekend.
The return of the competition with electric cars in Italy is an important occasion for ABB because the charging stations of the Terra series, for electric vehicles and electric buses, are produced in the San Giovanni Valdarno (AR) plant. This factory, which represents a $30 million investment for ABB, was inaugurated last year and is an example of a state-of-the-art factory in terms of digitization and sustainability.
A major electrified road pilot project

It’s an even more important venue now that we’re also the league’s charging partner. The ABB Formula E Race Charger, used to charge the Gen3 car, was developed in our factory in San Giovanni Valdarno.”
In addition to producing more conventional charging solutions, ABB in Italy is working to explore new innovative technologies.
sand of the future it’s a collaborative innovation project, developed by the Italian motorway operator Autostrada Brebemi-Aleatica, based on the inductive charging technology of electric vehicles. ABB is one of the infrastructure providers for the 1km pilot ring.
ABB installed the Sace Infinitus circuit breaker in the DC power substation, Sace Infinitus is the world’s first IEC 60947-2 certified solid state circuit breaker, and its use contributes to the implementation of Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer technology.
ABB solutions optimize energy consumption
The adoption of electric vehicles is just one element of ABB’s commitment to sustainability in Italy. In the Frosinone plant, where ABB produces over 3.5 million circuit-breakers a year, using data monitored with the ABB Abilit Energy Manager platform, energy consumption has been reduced for each circuit-breaker produced by 25%, this has made it possible to reduce average emissions per Scope 1 and 2 CO2 product by 33% compared to 2019.
The Frosinone site is also the first ABB plant to obtain the platinum rating for the absence of waste sent to landfill, according to the UL2799A environmental declaration validation procedure for zero waste classifications. This means that 100% of the site’s industrial waste is no longer landfilled.
ABB’s examples of energy efficiency and sustainability are shared with customers for replication. Farina Presse, a company from Suello (LC) that designs and builds presses for the hot forging of metal components and related automation systems, has joined theEnergy Efficiency Movementthe Movement launched by ABB to achieve the common goal of improving efficiency and reducing electricity consumption.
Thanks to the integration with ABB technologies (torque motors and ACS880 Multidrive inverters), together with the KERS technologyFarina Presse was able to reduce the energy consumption of its machines by 40%.
ABB Italia is also working on educational projects to inspire new generations with multiple projects. One of the most significant is the Robocup 2023a project that aims to equip young people with the skills and experience needed to program robots through a competition.
Over 1,000 students entered the competition and the final was held in May at the Robotics Technology Center of Vittuone (MI) in the presence of over 150 people, including teachers and students.
The Rome race weekend is the penultimate destination of ABB Formula E Season 9. London’s ExCel arena hosts the final races on 29 and 30 July.
