Google makes commitments to promote data portability of users with Google Takeout, as requested following the intervention of theCompetition and Market Guarantor Authority (AGCM).
Google, exporting your data becomes easier
As DDay explains, the investigation was born after the complaint of Hodathe company behind the Weople service, which allows users to monetize your data with your consent. But to do that, it needs access to all user data across Google’s various services.
Despite article 20 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) guarantees the right to data portability without impediments from the data controller, Weople would have encountered enormous difficulties in requesting the data from Google.

Google has accepted three specific commitments, described in the AGCM provision. Two of them concern the Takeout service, which allows users to get a backup copy of their Google account dataincluding your YouTube search history and emails sent and received via Gmail.
The first effort involves including a link in the third-party applications it redirects to Takeout, facilitating the selection and export of data by end users, so that they can be shared with third party operators. Also, some categories of data, such as “my activities”, “YouTube” and “Fit”will be pre-selected to simplify the process.
The second commitment concerns the provision of documentation and detailed information on data fields related to searches on Searchto. But also to the browsing history on Chrome and YouTube, included in “My activities”.
Finally, the third concerns a tool arriving by 1 October for operators and for everyone on 31 March 2024. Which will allow direct portability for authorized third-party operators.
