The Mortal Kombat 1 review: the definitive KO of a fighting game and pure?

When we found out that Mortal Kombat 1, the subject of our review, would have been the sequel to Mortal Kombat 11, a reboot of the entire franchise, we were confused. Self Mao Zedong he thought the confusion was great under the sky, it’s only because he hadn’t yet seen what he would do NetherRealm Studios with one of the most iconic video games ever. But not everything in Mortal Kombat 1 is to be thrown away, in fact, many things are simply to be kicked around.

Mortal Kombat 1 review

From a narrative point of view, Mortal Kombat 1 is the spiritual sequel to Mortal Kombat 11, which had (apparently) concluded the time saga with Liu Kang’s victory over Kronica. The new chapter picks up from that point, but introduces a series of new features both in the plot and in the gameplay. The most obvious is the addition of a cameosupport characters who can intervene during fights to help the main fighter with special moves.

This mechanic, inspired by team fighting games, adds a further level of strategy and customization, allowing you to create unique and original combinations between the various characters. In fact, each kameo has specific abilities, which can be offensive, defensive or useful for creating combos. The kameo system is also integrated into the story mode, where you can choose two characters for each chapter and alternate them depending on the situation.

More generally, Mortal Kombat 1’s gameplay is fluid and spectacular, with refined and detailed graphics. The characters are well animated and have believable physics, while the scenarios are varied and interactive. The moves are easy to perform and have good visual and audible feedback. Fatalities and brutalities are increasingly violent and creative. The combat system has been simplified compared to the previous chapter, eliminating the stamina and defense bars and introducing the offensive and defensive bars.

The Campaign

The first mode we tried, obviously, is the Campaign (or rather Campagna), which presents us with the character of Liu Kang, who as a platonic demiurge of his world introduces us to a parallel universe in which violence is not contemplated. Needless to say: after the first 3 minute film we will already be in an inn making chairs and opponents fly.

The story mode is indeed one of the most divisive points of Mortal Kombat 1. The plot follows the events of Liu Kang, Raiden and Johnny Cage, who must face a new threat from the realm of Chaos, led by Shang Tsung and Geras. In fact, the bad guy on duty has intention to steal the hourglass of time and rewrite history as he pleasesharnessing the power of kameos.

Along the way, you meet many well-known and lesser-known characters from the saga, some of which have been reworked with alternative origin stories. The tone of the story is a mixture of drama and irony, with epic and funny moments that alternate without clashing. The Italian dubbing is discreet, but not always up to the standard of the original voices.

The other game modes

In addition to the Campaign mode, Mortal Kombat 1 offers other single player options, such as classic towers not invasions. The first are timed or increasing difficulty challenges, which test the player’s skills and offer rewards in terms of coins, crystals and objects to use in the krypt.

Invasions, on the other hand, are seasonal missions which change every week and propose objectives to be achieved in online multiplayer.
