After Rogue One – a Star Wars Story, Gareth Edward is returning to the big screen with the gripping thriller The Creator which we can find in cinemas as early as September 28th
The film is available in theaters as early as September 28th, and now its author reveals the link between the new film and the Star Wars saga. The Creator is an action-packed fantasy thriller that stages a dystopian future where there is a war against a particular artificial intelligence that threatens to destroy humanity. L’ Artificial intelligence is a very topical issue, especially taking into account what has happened over the last few months, given theexploit obtained thanks to ChatGPT and various similar technologies.
Star Wars and The Creator, things in common
Gareth Edward is a big fan of science fiction, in fact he made his debut in 2010 with the film Monstera low budget film, but very spectacular and with a high degree of tension, which is always pleasant to see again (in fact it is available on Prime Video). Edward later directed Godzilla in 2014, but the real consecration came in 2016, when Gareth Edwars was at the helm of Rogue One – A Star Wars Story, one of the films considered among the best of the new Disney era of Star Wars. There is a certain thematic, but also aesthetic, coherence between Rogue One and The Creator.
It is Edwards himself who declares that Star Wars was, for him, the main reason why he chose to dedicate himself to science fiction:
I grew up with those films, which gave you the illusion and promise of a fascinating world of spaceships and robots. Obviously reality isn’t like that, and it never will be, and so I decided that I would become a liar like George Lucas, and I too would create stories that kids could grow up dreaming about.
Furthermore, he acknowledges a further debt he owes to the universe created by George Lucas, declaring:
From him and his films I learned that you can take inspiration from spiritual, mythological, religious elements that come from the most remote past, and ferry them directly into the most advanced future, between spaceships and robots, without there being any form of mediation.
The director also explains why, among the many locations used for The Creator, there are several locations in Southeast Asia:
Asia is the place in the world where you find this contrast the most: Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tokyo are metropolises that seem to have come out of Blade Runner, yet you just need to turn left down a small road and find yourself in front of an ancient temple and a monk. For the film I went in search of this almost Taoist opposition, these visual contrasts full of energy that interest me from every point of view.
This is a type of setting that will be best enhanced by the special effects and the typical atmosphere of this type of film which manage to maintain an adrenaline-filled and breathtaking pace.
