Gothenburg, Sweden – 1 November 2023: the outcome of the LCA study reveals that Polestar 4 has the lowest carbon footprint of all Polestar branded cars made to date, with a value of 19.4 tonnes of CO2e at launch
Polestar 4 is produced at Geely Holdings’ SEA plant in Hangzhou Bay, China, using advanced manufacturing plant technology, which combines hydroelectric energy I-REC certified with photovoltaic electricity supplied from the roof of the facility.
Increased use of low-carbon aluminium, sourced from smelters using hydroelectric power, helps to further reduce the carbon footprint of Polestar 4. Additionally, for the first time, numbers relating to the amount of recycled aluminium.
The commitment to reduce the carbon footprint
Available at least initially in China, the Polestar 4 Standard Single motor it is characterized by a carbon footprint of 19.4 tCO2e, while the Long range Dual motor has one of 21.4 tCO2e.
As regards the materials with which it is built, l‘aluminium represents 23-24% of the carbon footprint, while steel and iron make up 20%. The units that make up the battery represent the highest share of the ecological impact relating to production: the figure stands at 36-40%.
To support our goal of net zero emissions, we have established carbon budgets for all our cars. During Polestar 4’s product development, its carbon balance influenced everything from material choices to energy sources for factories. Sharing the LCA allows us to demonstrate that we can pursue the goal of net zero emissions – one tonne of CO2e at a time.

Polestar 4: transparency of the entire supply chain
Aligning with the new trend that is spreading among many large car manufacturers, Polestar has also decided to publish the details of the carbon footprint relating to the production of all its models.
The Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer believes that the automotive industry should be a major player in the transition towards more sustainable industrialization and that data transparency is a key factor.
Polestar’s LCA analysis, published starting in 2020, follows this philosophy by considering a series of factors in life cycle of a carfrom sourcing to production and recycling, summarized with easily understandable numerical data.
This allows the consumer to choose wisely more aware and transparent which car to buy: another appreciable step towards greener and more inclusive mobility.
