In the chaotic chaos that has been the Multiverse Saga so far, the TV series centered on Loki, god of deception and Thor’s brother, was the only fixed point that more or less everyone agreed on. Driven by bravery of Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson, Loki is back on Disney+ for a long-awaited second season which, although up and down, really convinced at least at the beginning and end. All this despite the release two years after the first seasonwhich had introduced the potential of this new saga into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in a moment of tiredness and confusion that precisely those potentials seem to have wasted.
So, after a very good premiere, we were left cold by some rather insipid episodes, with the clear impression that the story was going in circles and taking its time, despite the brevity of a season consisting of only six episodes. In our review of Loki 2 we will try to explain to you, without spoiling too much about the ending, although it is inevitable for the purposes of our analysis, why you should absolutely watch this series.
Plot and trailer | Loki 2 review
The protagonists seek to repair the time frame, which the killing of the One Who Remains has created countless ramifications to the sacred timeline. To do it they will have to find a variant of Kang same, which seems to be the only key to succeeding in the undertaking and saving the multiverse. There bizarre science fiction with which the story was carried forward, embodied in that wonderful Ke Huy Quan who plays Ouroboros, one of the new acquisitions of this season, an engineer of the Time Variance Authority who has a decidedly important role in this tranche of episodes, dominates this season. Together with magic embodied by Loki, who is able to jump through time, albeit in an uncontrolled manner.
A season that takes its time | Loki 2 review
Let’s say, however, that the discussions on time frames, variations, people who stay and people who leave, at a certain point also leave a little of the time they find. Despite some chases and some fights, Loki 2 is a highly introspective season which finds its place in the dialogues and interactions between the various characters, especially among the protagonists that Thor’s brother comes to consider friends, Moebius above all.
The script mostly follows two conductive wires: the transformation of TVA in light of the shocking revelations that emerged at the end of the first season, which resolves itself in this year’s central episodes, and the race against time, literally, to save the Multiverse from the destruction triggered by Sylvie when she murdered the One that remains.
A conflict that pits Loki and his men against the intentions of Ravona Renslayer and the disturbing artificial intelligence Miss Minutes, determined to recruit Victor Timeley, an inventor from the 1800s who is actually a variant of the One Who Remains and, thus, Kang and all his counterparts who threaten to tear the Multiverse apart. Timely is once again Jonathan Majors, here in his third interpretation of the same character; following He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, Majors delivers another stellar performance that only highlights what a grave loss it would be to the Marvel Cinematic Universe if Disney fired him due to his troubles with the law.
An excellent ending | Loki 2 review
The great value of Loki 2 lies in the screenplay, which lies precisely in the fact of not having a real “final boss” nor to focus the conflict on action or combat: it is a quite original perspective for a Marvel Studios show that rewards the viewer with excellent writing that works on the characters and, above all, on the evolution of Loki.
Odin’s stepson, who arrived on Earth full of glorious intentions in Marvel’s The Avengers, is probably the best characterized character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Tony Stark. Tom Hiddleston has walked two hero paths at this point, first playing the antagonist Loki who becomes an ally of Thor over the course of various films and meets his end in Avengers: Infinity War; then always the same Loki who, starting from Avengers: Endgame, still redeems himself during his own TV series, becoming the complete opposite of what he would have wanted to be when this story began.
It is no coincidence that the first episode of the first season of Loki and the last of the (connected) second season are titled A glorious purpose. It’s a practically perfect closing of the circle that is also expressed in the time loop in which the TVA is trapped. Ironically, in the season finale there isn’t even a real action scene, but only dialogues and monologues. It is a strongly introspective endingall centered on the character of Loki who, little by little, finally realizes his true destiny in a scene of one astonishing visual and musical power.
Conclusions
The season (or series?!) finale of Loki 2 is a rare gem in a Marvel Cinematic Universe that in recent years has increasingly drifted adrift, offering content that seems to have no direction. Loki 2, on the other hand, is a show worked with passion by actors in great shape and with a rare alchemy. A contained but carefully selected cast, which gives its best within a story that is itself sparse but well conceived. The triumph of quality over quantity, which is definitely good for this MCU.
A new beginning for the MCU
Points in favor
- Excellent cast, well selected and with strong chemistry
- Excellently conceived beginning and ending
Points against
- The middle episodes are a bit of filler
