In this new episode of the Chara subcategory, part of our Anime Breakfast format, we will talk in detail about Joseph Joestar, what we believe to be the most important and, why not, also the most charismatic character of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
We already talked about Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure in the last episode of Anime Breakfast dedicated to him, today we want to offer you another episode of the Chara subcategory. But since this is the second installment of this genre, we first want to explain to you again what a Chara. As you have seen, every Sunday with the Anime Breakfast format we talk about our favorite anime and we have written about various genres, including canonical episodes in which we simply talk about an anime that impressed us, gods VS in which we hypothesize who would emerge victorious in a clash between two characters or simple women TOP of anime characters. So what is Chara? In episodes of this kind, we simply talk about a character who struck us in particular. The first protagonist of this format was Nami from One Piece, but now we want to talk to you about what we believe to be the most important and most charismatic character of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, as well as the first male protagonist of Anime Breakfast Chara: Joseph Joestar!

Let’s start with an assumption: Joseph Joestar is not the first protagonist of the anime. The one who started the great anthology story of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is in fact Jonathan Joestar. He started the generational battle against Dio Brando, but despite this, he is not the most important in the anime series. We would like to give this role to his nephew Joseph. The character appears for the first time in the second chapter of Jojo, Battle Tendency and he’s a simple guy with a great sense of humor but who has to welcome a very heavy burden. What happens to Joseph (as well as his successors) happens against his will. Joseph Joestar is the first to have to grasp the Joestar legacy and get involved in the battle against Dio Brando.
In the second part of Battle Tendency, although God is not present, Joseph has theenormous responsibility to stop the Pillar Men, which have the objective of reconstructing the stone mask, or the ancient artifact that made Dio Brando immortal. Joseph’s character becomes of high importance when he accepts the Curse of the Joestars, or that of fighting against Dio Brando and his affiliates who intend to take over the world. This, however, is only Joseph’s first step. His story, in fact, does not end with his victory against the Pillar Men, but continues in the third chapter of the series: Stardust Crusaders.

As for Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency had a closed ending, with Joseph having managed to fulfill his mission and realize himself, find a wife and build a family, as we see in the final scene where he is at the airport to take a flight to Japan, where his Daughter. The story seems to end there, but that ending connects back to the beginning of Stardust Crusaders, what in our opinion is the most beautiful part of Jojo. Joseph then reappears at the beginning of the third part and, although he is over 60 years old, he is still fit and proves to be fundamental in the “final battle” against Dio Brando.
What Joseph does in Stardust Crusaders is something extraordinary. He helps his nephew Jotaro Kujo out of prison, teaches him to master his Stand, and leads a group of the two Joestars, Avdol, Kakyoin, Polnareff, and Iggy on a tortuous journey, full of enemies to face, to Egypt. Joseph proves to be a leader nato, managing to inspire above all his nephew to continue the crusade started by their ancestor Johnathan Joestar and put an end to Dio Brando’s reign of terror. Not only that, he is also a formidable fighter, perfectly capable of controlling his stand Hermit Purple and face tremendous opponents with immense powers. Joseph could have let it go, continued living life and enjoyed his retirement, but remembering the burden he had placed on his shoulders, he once again springs into action to stop his family’s historic enemy forever.

What we wanted to talk about regarding Joseph is the importance it has in ensuring that the story continues. As we have already said, Johnathan starts everything, but it is Joseph who bears the weight of the consequences of the clash between the two and he does it with a smile. As rude as a sixty-year-old with an Arnold Schwarzenegger physique is who fights hard with opponents who should be stronger than him, However, Joseph is the pillar on which Jojo’s entire story rests. Thanks to him Jotaro grows and learns to survive in a dangerous world, thanks to him Josuke came to life and thanks to him the master Hirohiko Araki was able to continue telling Jojo’s story.
What most characterizes Joseph, however, is his irony, who even in the darkest moments manages to get a laugh, whether he wanted it or not. This makes him the most charismatic character in the series, in addition to obviously the importance he has for everything to intertwine. Analyzing every part of Jojo in detail, the secondary characters we have come to know exist thanks to the Joseph’s awareness on the generational struggle against Dio Brando. Even though he made big mistakes, like making Josuke an illegitimate child, he still made up for it, making sure his youngest son was safe as well. Just as Jotaro took inspiration from his grandfather to be a good father to his daughter Jolyne. So, in short, Joseph is at the center of everything.
