The trouble of reinterpreting the famous Sony production in an online key was clear from the tweet that “communicated” its continuous development as a side note after talking about a competitor’s game. However, today we finally have a confirmation that many unfortunately feared. The Last of Us multiplayer cancelled: why?
The statement included in the tweet above explains why Naughty Dog made the difficult decision, but the fate of The Last of Us multiplayer is irreversible: the game has been canceled. “We understand that many of you have been hoping to hear from the project we called The Last of Us Online. There’s no easy way to say this: we made the tough choice to stop development. […] The designated team has been involved in the pre-production phase since we worked on Part II, creating an experience that is unique to us and has tremendous potential.” As “satisfying” as the gameplay of the multiplayer version was, however, “as production itself began it became clear how big the scope would be,” putting Naughty Dog at a crossroads. Between a live service-only studio future and the single-player legacy, the development team chose the latter.
