Games of Thrones fans will be able to dive back into their favorite universe thanks to new spin-offs this time in an animated version
The author George RR Martin himself revealed that its most famous universe has several animated spin-offs in the works. The fantasy world of A Song of Ice & Fire, the literary saga from which the television series Game of Thrones is based, also has among its projects the Nine Voyages series, that is, a show focused on the maritime exploits of Corlys Velaryin, better known as the Sea Snake. In fact, the writer announces on his personal blog:
We transformed Nine Voyages, our series on the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, from live action to animation. A move I fully support. Budget constraints would probably have made a live action version too expensive, considering half the show takes place at sea, and the need to create a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, and so on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a much better chance of showing it all with animation. So now we have three animated projects going.
More spin-offs pending for the Games of Thrones expansion
Already in 2021 HBO had decided to expand the Games of Thrones universe with a series of new projects and ideas, in addition to Nine Voyages, Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships were also mentioned. The project that was most advanced was Sea Snake, in fact a creative team had already been hired for development. It had also been hypothesized an animated version of Games of Thrones itself for the digital platform HBO Max. In his blog Martin also talked about these pending projects, explaining that none of them have yet been approved:
None of these have been approved yet, but I think we’re close to taking the next step with a couple of them. When this latest round of development began a few years ago, we had four ideas for animated shows, with some great talent involved. Writers’ rooms and summits, outlines and scripts followed in due course… but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved. Those who have read my blogs in years past may remember that I prefer to say “shelved” rather than “deleted,” because nothing is ever dead forever in Hollywoodand a project put aside one year can be resumed a few years later.
