Elegance and compactness – Acer Chromebook 514, hands-on and impressions
The notebook presents itself at first glance very elegant and compact. With his dimensions of 320 x 220 x 20 mm it falls within the average, without being overly large or small. The weight of about 1365 g It also makes it easy to carry even for long stretches and does not tire us in the slightest. It’s obviously not the lightest Chromebook around, but there’s no complaining about that.
The upper body is completely in aluminum and here we can see the company logo and the one that identifies it in all respects as a Chromebook. The designated coloring, combined with the choice of aluminum as a construction material, make this laptop truly stylish, with very well cared for shapes. To complete it all, we find one on the perimeter finish that gives shine and a fine style.
Turning now to the sides of the laptop we find, as regards the right one, the battery led, a microSD reader e one USB 3.0 port; diametrically opposite instead there are one 3.5 mm jack, a HDMI port e due porte USB type-C. It is therefore noticeable the absence of an optical reader, a choice that is now the most popular in these models. In the lower part instead we find, in addition to the four rubber pads, the two speakers to listen to the audio output.
Keyboard and display – Acer Chromebook 514, hands-on and impressions
Opening is facilitated thanks to the design that allows you to comfortably lift the screen. The hinges give a sense of solidity and allow the laptop to reach an opening of 180 °, although the design allows to stabilize the screen at a precise 90 °. Once the laptop is opened 180 ° we can see the two grids for heat dissipation. However, only one of them is open, thus limiting the escape of hot air.
The Chromebook is equipped with a 14 ″ Acer ComfyView IPS LED LCD panel, with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. We are therefore talking about a FullHD that as a whole manages to give a good image without particularly excelling. The edges around they are not exactly subtle, although they are not too coarse either. On the top we can see a webcam with a useful hatch to hide it when not in use.
A small sore point instead concerns the keyboard which turns out to be in a bit noisy as you type. Nothing to complain about the backlighting that characterizes the same and allows good visibility in case of low light. The trackpad turned out to be quite accurate and responsive, allowing us to move from one side of the screen to another in a short time and without any smudging. Finally to the right of the trackpad and just below the keyboard we can find a very useful one fingerprint reader, very useful for the safety of the device.
In short, this new laptop from Acer looks like really well structured, although it was not possible to test it to actually verify its performance. Another small flaw, however, concerns charging, not so much for the fact that is done via USB type-C socket and therefore we must give up one of the two, as for the charger itself. The power supply in fact turns out to be quite large compared to the size of the Chromebook.
It also comes with a spina Schuko and therefore for many it will be indispensable buy an adapter to always carry with you. In short, if aesthetically and structurally nothing can be said in general, a few more small precautions certainly could not have improved this product. What do you think of this Chromebook?
