28 Years Later, the second sequel to 28 Days Later, followed by 28 Weeks Later, reunites Danny Boyle and Alex Garland once again and will kick off a trilogy
There has been talk for some time about the sequel to 28 Days Later, the cult zombie movie written by Alex Garland and scripted by Danny Boyle. We already know that the film is called 28 Years Later, and we can add that the director and screenwriter would like to make two more films, in order to have a trilogy. The film comes after 28 Weeks Later, directed in 2007 by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. It was Garland’s doubts about this latest disaster movie that pushed the writer and screenwriter (and director) to embark on the adventure together with Boyle.
Released in 2002 and starring Cillian Murphy, 28 Days Later was a notable success, renewing the zombie genre because the undead that populated an apocalyptic London that a man who had emerged from 28 days of a coma found himself facing were very fast and truly threatening. Costing 8 million dollars, it grossed 84 million overall and continued its success rise to popularity thanks to home video. 28 Weeks Later featured Danny Boyle and Alex Garland solely as executive producers. With a budget of 15 million dollars, the film earned 65 million worldwide.
28 Years Later: What we know about the second 28 Days Later sequel
Danny Boyle, who, among other things, hasn’t directed a film since 2019, the year of the romantic comedy Yesterday. Garland, on the other hand, directed first Men and then Civil War, which arrived after the excellent Ex Machina and Annihilation. The new film will have a budget of around $75 million, and Boyle and Garland will also serve as producers. Cillian Murphy is not included in the film, although in 2022 the actor said he had spoken several times about a new film with the director and screenwriter.
Maybe eventually Cillian Murphy will be in the film, or maybe he will star in the next chapters of the new one franchise. For now we can’t know, but the important thing is that the sequel will happen, and with Boyle and Garland at the helm, it cannot be disappointing.
