Welcome to this new episode of Aperit-Hero! The weekly column where we talk about our favorite heroes, their journey, their exploits and, sadly, also their end: in today’s Aperit-Hero we talk about Wolverine! One of the most iconic characters not only in comics, but also in cinema
Talking about this character is still difficult today, especially after the end he had in the film Logan, which concluded its story. There’s good news, though, we’ll see him again on the big screen in Deadpool 3, which now finally has an official release date. We are talking about Wolverinethe most beloved mutant in the world, played by the talented Australian actor Hugh Jackman (check out his filmography). It will be hard to talk about Logan, who as much as we are happy about his return in the third Deadpool film, its end still hurts a lot. But before we get there, let’s throw ourselves into the past and relive these together 20 years of films.
The origins | Aperit-Hero: Wolverine and the Curse of Immortality
Although it is not the first film in the mutant saga, X-Men Origins – Wolverine is the beginning of the story of our beloved Logan. Born in 1832then a early 19th century, James Howlett he was the son of a noble, very rich family, who continually spoiled the little boy. Suddenly, however, his life changed when he discovered he had gods mutant genes, and he discovered it when, mistakenly and in a fit of rage, he killed a man who he discovered shortly after was his father. James fled with his brother Victor and began a new life. The two grow up together and become trained mercenaries after both living there before the Second World War. Their regeneration makes them immortal and this caught the general’s attention Stryker, a man who promised them a better life. This life, however, did not suit Logan, because the group of mercenaries in which he found himself killed innocents for no reason and from that point the man distanced himself not only from his colleagues, but also from his brother. This time he really begins his new life, changing her name to Logan. Now the man has a woman who loves him, Kayla Silverfoxwho tells him a legend: the spirit of the Moon and the wolf Kuekuatsheu (in English Wolverine) were in love, but Kuekuatsheu was separated from the Moon spirit by deception and can no longer be with the spirit since then.
This story will remain with him, and when his brother Victor returns to find him and kill Kayla, Logan accepts the help that Stryker offered him to take revenge and kill his beloved’s killer. He takes part in an experiment that makes it his own adamantium skeleton, so that he can defeat his opponent. From that moment Logan, to honor his beloved, calls himself Wolverine. During the journey, Logan discovers that Stryker wants to eliminate him, so he lets himself help him Gambit, another mutant, to find him. Once they arrive on the island where Stryker’s base is, Logan discovers that Kayla is alive and is herself a mutant. He initially feels betrayed, but when the woman clarifies, they reunite to free other mutants held as prisoners on the island and Logan fights against a super mutant called Weapon XI. After the fight ends, Stryker places an adamantium bullet in Logan’s skull, erasing his memory. From this point Logan no longer remembers anything about his life, except his name and what they call him: Wolverine.
Logan’s Salvation | Aperit-Hero: Wolverine and the Curse of Immortality
After the events seen in his origin film, Logan lives a solitary life, doing different types of jobs, never managing to find his place in the world. He lives a terrible life, in complete solitude, never using his powers to protect others, but using them only for himself. Things change when he meets Mariealias Rogue, a young mutant capable of draining the energy of anyone she touches. The two meet at a bar where Logan participates in clandestine fights. They make friends and leave the club together, until they are attacked by another mutant: Sabretooth. Logan and Marie are later rescued by Storm e Cyclopsshortly after Wolverine wakes up in a school called X-Mansion. In this place Logan’s life improves, thanks to the help of the school principal, the Professor Charles Xavier, a mutant telepath who created the school specifically to accommodate and educate mutants. A safe place for those looking for a home, but above all a family.
With them X-Men, Logan finds a new family. The X-Men were created to fight against other mutants who want to destroy the human race, an ideal created by Xavier’s best friend, Erik Lehnsherrknown as Magneto. With the X-Men, Logan makes new friends, finds a family to stay with, and falls in love all over again, thanks to Jean Grey. Jean becomes one of the most important people in Logan’s life, but also the one who triggered one of the greatest traumas in our antihero’s memory. When Jean loses controlin fact, Logan is forced to kill her, to save the world from a power capable of wiping out everything. From that moment, Logan has continuous memories of her, he suffers greatly from missing her and is unable to forgive himself for killing her. It is believed a monster, an indomitable beast that kills without criteria. Another trauma in his life that isolates him even more. scaring him so much that he no longer wants to have ties to anyone.
Save the future | Aperit-Hero: Wolverine and the Curse of Immortality
We arrive at the most painful moment: Logan. First of all this Wolverine movie is completely different from all cinecomics, not just from the X-Men films. Here we are no longer making a comic book film, but a real one Author’s film, where we talk about a tired, aged and sick man, aware that his end is coming and that he must figure out what to do with his last days. We are in the 2029in a world completely devoid of mutants, the last ones left are Wolverine, Xavier e Calibano. The dynamics are not clear, but the film suggests that the mutants disappeared after one extermination by a group of anti-mutant criminals known as Reavers. Logan works as a limo driver to get enough money to take Xavier and Caliban and leave Texas for a better place. Things change when she appears in his life Lauraan 11-year-old mutant girl who turns out to be Logan’s daughter. Laura was created by an experiment, using Wolverine’s DNA, along with many other mutant kids. These were created for help the mutants to be reborn. Logan isn’t very convinced about the idea of having to accompany his daughter to theEden, the place where Laura’s friends are. But he is there to convince him Xavierwho recommends him to accompany her to save the mutant race.
They encounter great difficulties during their journeys, i Reavers they try to stop them and kill them. When the three stop to help a family recall their horses after an accident on the highway, the family invites them to their farm to rest. That night they were caught by surprise and, while Logan was out, the Reavers released X-24which would be a perfect clone of Wolverine. The clone kills Xavier and Logan is no longer motivated to take Laura to Eden after burying her friend. Finally, his daughter convinces him anyway and they finally find the place, where Logan decides to help the young mutants save themselves. The Reavers find them once again, but thanks to a mutageno, Logan grows stronger and fights against the criminals, facing his clone in one last stand. A clash that unfortunately reveals itself mortal for Logan, impaled by the root of a tree. Laura kills the clone and Logan looks at her daughter, holding her hand. After realizing that she had saved his daughter, Logan dies peacefully In his arms. Wolverine’s story ends with his daughter burying him together with his friends, who create a cross with branches and place it on the grave. Finally, Laura takes the cross and repositions it, forming a Xin memory of the last of the X-Men, Wolverine.
A man who finds his peace
After having relived (and cried) Logan’s life, let’s reflect on this great character. Logan is a man who he lived in solitude. His mutant genes allowed him to continuously generate and therefore to be immortal. The problem, however, and this is what Logan teaches us, is that immortality is a curse. Superficial people will say that never dying is great, but being immortal means see all your loved ones die, and this creates an endless cycle of loneliness. As time goes by, after all the people who have left his life, he found great difficulty in bonding with someone else. That’s because Logan knew that everyone would be out of his life, one way or another. This is a real torment and the only solution to all this is one fine. Every great story must have an end, or it becomes a nightmare to live it. She put in 200 years to get there, but ultimately Logan also reached the end of his life. Even though it’s been a very sad and lonely life, Logan has found peace.
