Polestar 4 is now officially available for purchase in Europe and Australia. Let’s find out all the details in this dedicated article
After the start of production and first deliveries in China at the end of 2023, online sales start with an indicative starting price of 66.900€. Production is expected to begin in mid-2024, with first deliveries expected from August. Polestar 4 redefines the aerodynamics of a coupé and the comfort of an SUV, thus creating a new category of SUV coupé. Design elements already seen in Polestar’s concept cars are brought into production in Polestar’s fastest production car to date. In terms of size and price, Polestar 4 is positioned between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3.
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar:
The introduction of Polestar 4 in all our markets during 2024 plays a crucial role in our success, enriching our model range. Polestar 4 conquers the premium performance class in the D-SUV segment. Polestar 4’s innovative interpretation of a coupe SUV offers great interior space and a striking appearance.
Design
As a design-oriented brand, Polestar 4’s design sees the continuation of key elements first shown by the Polestar Precept concept car. These include the elimination of the rear window, which enables a new type of immersive experience for rear occupants, and the separation of the twin-blade headlights with the unique Polestar light signature, complemented by the Polestar logo with millimeter precision illumination from the Bass.
Aerodynamic efficiency is improved by the low front, retractable door handles, from flush windows, rear aerodynamic fins and optimized airflow around the rear light bar. Built on the premium Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) developed by Geely Holding, Polestar 4 is a D-segment coupe SUV with a large body and a long wheelbase of 2,999 mm.
The overall length is 4,840 mm, the width is 2,139 mm and the height is 1,534 mm. The generous interior proportions are particularly evident in the rear seat, where passengers are enveloped in an intimate environment, with electric seats. Adjustable ambient lighting that adds an extra dimension to the interior ambience, inspired by the solar system, allows passengers to personalize the driving environment. The absence of a rear window allows the full-length glass roof to extend beyond the heads of the rear passengers, creating a truly unique interior environment. A secondary screen for media and climate control is mounted between the front seats to allow monitoring of rear occupants.
Lo rearview mirror it’s replaced by a high-definition screen that shows a real-time feed from a roof-mounted rear-view camera, allowing for a much wider field of view than you can get in most modern cars. The digital signal can be deactivated to allow the driver to see rear occupants if necessary.
Maximilian Missoni, Head of Design di Polestarhe claims:
With Polestar Precept we anticipated a new and extraordinary passenger experience by removing the rear window and pushing the C-pillar further back, which plays an integrated safety role. This means that rear passengers can now enjoy a unique experience in our SUV coupe.
The interior and its materials were designed around the theme of “soft tech”, taking inspiration from the fashion and sportswear industries. The exploration of new colors and materials for Polestar 4 represents an innovative step in Polestar’s styling vision, including new exterior colors Storm and Electron and a new unique interior color, Mist.
Sustainability
In late 2023, the Swedish automaker revealed that Polestar 4 has the lowest carbon footprint of all its cars at launch. Polestar 4 is produced at Geely Holdings’ SEA factory in Hangzhou Bay, China. The factory combines green electricity with I-REC hydropower certification and photovoltaic electricity generated from the factory roof. Increased use of low-carbon aluminum from smelters using hydroelectricity helps further reduce climate impact. Furthermore, data on the share of recycled aluminum was included in the assessment for the first time.
The Long range Single motor version of Polestar 4 has a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of 19.9 tCO2e, while the Long range Dual motor has 21.4 tCO2e. Aluminum accounts for 22.4-24% of the carbon footprint, while steel and iron make up 20%, and battery modules account for the largest share of the carbon footprint of materials manufacturing and refining at 36- 40%.
A single-material approach, first presented in the 2022 Polestar electric roadster concept vehicle, is applied to interior materials, where all layers of certain components are produced from the same base material. This allows them to be recycled more effectively and efficiently, eliminating the need to separate incompatible materials before recycling.
New interior materials include a bespoke knit fabric made from 100% recycled PET, along with bio-attributed MicroTech vinyl, and leather with Bridge of Weir traceability – where rawhides are by-products of the food industry and come from Scottish farms independently rated by the Animal Protection Index as being of the highest global standard.
Tailored knitted upholstery is a new technique for the automotive industry. First introduced in the Precept concept car, the fabric is made from 100% recycled polyester. The material and design were created by Polestar designers together with the Swedish School of Textiles and further developed with suppliers. It is custom made, producing minimal waste and reducing waste overalli.
The interior carpets are made with Recycled PET and floor carpets with ECONYL, which includes recycled fishing nets. The specific door panels are made of NFPP (natural fiber polypropylene), resulting in a 50% reduction in virgin plastic and a weight saving of up to 40%. MicroTech, first introduced in the Polestar 3, is a bioattributed vinyl that replaces crude oil with pine oil in its construction and features a recycled textile backing.
Performance
Polestar 4 is the production car fastest that the brand has developed to date. It can reach 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and the maximum power is 400 kW (544 hp). The motors are of the permanent magnet synchronous type. The driving dynamics are typical of the Polestar brand: the steering and handling are very precise and guarantee an exciting and agile driving experience for all passengers.
Dual- and single-motor variants are available, with the single-motor featuring rear-wheel drive. Despite high power and performance, control and confidence are always key factors to produce a responsible and enjoyable EV experience every day. Semi-active suspension is featured on the dual-motor version for an additional level of adjustment between comfort and performance dynamics. Wheel sizes range from 20 to 22 incheswith tires supplied by Pirelli and Michelin, depending on the configuration.
A 100 kWh battery is installed in both long-range versions. The Long range Dual motor has 400 kW (544 hp), 686 Nm and a preliminary range target of up to 580 km WLTP. A disconnect clutch allows the car to disengage the front electric motor when not needed, to maximize autonomy and efficiency. The Long range Single motor version features a 200 kW (272 hp) and 343 Nm motor at the rear, with a preliminary range target of up to 610 km WLTP.
For both versions and for AC charging, a power of 200 kW DC and 22 kW is included. The charging lid is motorized. Two-way charging hardware is includedwith vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality coming at a later date, allowing external devices to draw energy from the Polestar 4. A heat pump is fitted as standard, allowing the car to make use of ambient heat during the preconditioning of the passenger compartment and the battery.
A new driving optimization function allows the driver to choose between Range or Performance driving modes in the Long range Dual motor version. Performance mode sharpens the responsiveness of the powertrain and engages both engines at all times to obtain maximum power delivery and best performance. Range mode prioritizes efficiency, tailoring the powertrain to a quieter style and forcing only the rear engine to be used.
Technology
Polestar continues its technological push towards a more fun, connected and autonomous future in all its vehicles. In the Polestar 4, the infotainment system based on Android Automotive OS and the Snapdragon Cockpit Platform now uses a 15.4 inches horizontally oriented. With Google integrated, including Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play, Polestar continues to offer a world-class connected experience. The close collaboration with Google allows Polestar to continue to push the boundaries of the system.
A Harman Kardon sound system is available as an option with 12 speakers and a 1-channel hybrid amplifier 1.400 watt. Two additional headrest speakers are added to each front seat with the optional Nappa Pack, bringing the total to 16. By default, wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity is included. As with Polestar’s other cars, regular over-the-air updates allow new features and improvements to be pushed remotely to all cars, eliminating the need to go to a repair shop to get the latest software.
Safety
Safety is part of Polestar’s DNA thanks to its strong connection with Volvo Cars and these safety genes are incorporated into the Polestar 4, which features cutting-edge safety technology both inside and out – tested to the same rigorous standards as all other Polestar cars . Seven airbags are included. New partnerships bring smart safety technology to the forefront, including Mobileye’s SuperVision advanced driver assistance system. There are twelve cameras, a radar and twelve ultrasonic sensors as standard.
These include a driver monitoring camera, which only transmits data and does not record video, to monitor the driver’s eyes and head movements and help avoid accidents related to tiredness or…
